Jake - Buffalo, NY

If I receive AP Credit for a course, what happens next? i.e.--Do I get to take an elective instead of that course, or am I simply placed into higher level course in that same field of study....or am I exempt from taking a class altogether (and potentially graduate early)?

ND Admissions

Jake,it is possible to complete requirements using AP credit, for example credit for FYC 13100 will complete the composition requirement. Credit for MATH 10550-560 will complete the math requirement for Arts and Letters Architecture, and Business students while engineers would simply move to the next required course. Science students have math requirements that vary by major. Overall, the students program od study is the key element in how AP credit is used.

Jack - Briarcliff Manor, NY

Hi again. I understand that an ND scholar is the top 20% of the admitted class, but was wondering what was used to determine this: is it based on SATs, and if so what were the required grades? Also, does being an ND scholar automatically place a student in the Honors Program? Thanks

ND Admissions

Jack,

A combination of grades and SAT or ACT scores are used to determine a Notre Dame scholar. Generally speaking, most ND Scholar designates are at or very near the top of his/her high school class and have scored above a 1500 (our of 1600) on the SAT and 34 or better on the ACT.

Although being a ND scholar is a great honor, it does not automatically place a student in the Honors Program at Notre Dame. The Honors Program has even greater academic requirements but also has academic intent requirements. An admitted student must want to study in the College of Arts & Letters or the College of Science to be considered for the Glynn Honors Program

Lexi - Fairfax, VA

How many people play intramural sports, and which are the most popular?

ND Admissions

Hi Lexi,

All students are invited to participate in intramural sports throughout the year. Students find that it’s a great way to meet new people, get some exercise, and take a break from classwork. Football is very popular in the fall – both the male and female championship games are played in Notre Dame Stadium. Basketball, soccer, and volleyball are some popular traditional sports. Some students like to try unique sports such as broomball and horseshoe.

Chris - Linwood, NJ

Financial aid is a large factor in my college decision, and while Notre Dame is my first choice school, I have to wait and see the kind of package I am offered here and elsewhere. I've completed many scholarships with hopes of gaining some ground, but what is Notre Dame's history in financial assistance?

ND Admissions

Hi Chris,

For the 2007/2008 academic year, the average financial aid package was $30,780.The average need-based scholarship award was $24,124. The average need-based loan was $3,291 and the average non-need based aid amount was $6,316.

Karen - Ortonville, MI

Do all students get some type of aid, excluding loans?

ND Admissions

Hi Karen,

Approximately 80% of the students at Notre Dame received some form of financial aid last year (including loans). Approximately 44% of the students who applied for financial aid demonstrate eligibility to receive need-based University Scholarship assistance.

Marguerite - Fox Point, WI

I've heard wonderful things about the residential system at Notre Dame. I was wondering if residential assignments were completely random or if information from the online application is taken into account.

ND Admissions

Residence hall assignments are random for the first year! We do make sure that you and your roomate have difference zip codes.

Colleen - Jamestown, RI

Just wondering...are the dining halls open all day? or just at specific meal times?

ND Admissions

The Dining Halls are open at specific meal times. On weekdays from 7-9am they serve hot breakfast, 10:30-2:00pm is lunch, and 4:30-9:00pm is dinner. On weekends they open from 11:30am-1:30pm for brunch and 4:30-7:00pm for dinner.

There is also a Grab-N-Go option where students can use their meal to get items for a sack-type lunch that is open from 7am-7pm, Monday through Friday.

Jean-Luc - Davie, FL

1) I'm planning a visit to the campus, so I was wondering which air-line is best for getting to Indiana? 2) How do I go about staying in a dorm with someone I know over a weekend?

ND Admissions

Jean-Luc,

The South Bend Regional Airport is about 15 minutes by car from the Notre Dame campus (flights should be booked to South Bend, Ind. Airport Code is SBN). From the airport, go east on Lincolnway West (left out of the airport) to downtown South Bend. Turn left on Indiana 933 (Michigan St.) and proceed about two miles to Angela Blvd. Turn right onto Angela, and then turn left at the second stoplight (Eddy St.). Follow signs to visitor parking.

Visitors also can fly to Chicago (O’Hare = ORD; Midway = MDW) and drive or take a bus to Notre Dame. The University is about two hours by car from Chicago’s O’Hare International Airport and about 90 minutes from Midway International Airport. From O’Hare, take I-190 east out of the airport, merge onto I-90 east (the Kennedy Expressway) toward downtown Chicago and merge with I-94 south (the Dan Ryan Expressway). Take the Skyway exit off the Dan Ryan and remain on I-90 to the Indiana Toll Road, which merges with I-80. From the Illinois border, it is about 75 miles to Exit 77 (the South Bend/Notre Dame exit).

Coach USA operates a motor coach bus service between both O’Hare and Midway Airports in Chicago and the Notre Dame campus. The bus departs every two hours and makes several stops; travel time to campus is approximately three hours. A one-way fare is $35, round-trip fare is $63. Please visit busville.com for more information.

In regards to your second question, you can contact the person you know and ask if you can stay with them for the weekend. However, I would also try to take in some of the other options available to admitted students. That information can be found in the packet that was sent with your admission letter.

Phil - , MI

I know that football is a big deal at Notre Dame, but will one be ridiculed if they go to the library and study during a football game

ND Admissions

Hey Phil!

I don’t know anyone who doesnt go to the games & ND kids are usually pretty kind so I don’t think you would get ridiculed, but you might get some odd reactions. you should definitely go to the games—you will have enough time to study during the week :)

Billy - Scotch Plains, NJ

How much flexibility is there when choosing classes, especially in the first year.

ND Admissions

Billy, the flexibility in course selection is dependent on the amount of AP credit you earn and your intended program. Engineering students have the least flexibility and Arts and Letters students have the most.

John - Dallas, TX

Any pets allowed in dorms? And video game systems?

ND Admissions

Non-carnivorous fish and all videogame systems, from the Magnavox Odyssey to the XBox 360, are welcome!

Brian - Knoxville, TN

What does the average student's financial aid package look like? What portion of the overall cost of attendance does financial aid typically cover?

ND Admissions

Hi Brian,

The average financial aid package last year was $30,800 with an average scholarship over $24,000. The total cost of attendance last year was approximately $48,000.

John - Plano, Tx

Between freshman and sophomore year at ND, is there a place where furniture/items can be stored until the fall semester?

ND Admissions

Hey John!

yes. each dorm has a truck that comes & you can put your stuff in the truck over the summer. you could also get your own storage space off campus

Andrew - Whittier, CA

Is there money available for students whose families make enough to not qualify for financial aid, but don't have enough for full tuition?

ND Admissions

Hi Andrew,

If you do not believe you would qualify for need-based assistance and would rather not complete both the FAFSA and the CSS/Financial Aid PROFILE, there are still non-need-based options. There is a non-need-based federal loan – the Federal Unsubsidized Stafford Loan. In order to qualify for this loan, students must complete a FAFSA each year.

Families can also apply for a Federal Parent PLUS Loan and/or a private student loan without completing the FAFSA or the CSS/Financial Aid PROFILE. You can learn more about all of these loan opportunities by visiting our website at http://www.nd.edu/~finaid/undergraduate/loans/ and clicking on the various links.

Students are also afforded the opportunity to work on campus without needing to complete either form. Students are also encouraged to apply for outside scholarships through free web-based searches such as fastweb.com and collegeboard.com (many of which may be based on criteria other than need). Please note that all scholarships awarded through the Office of Financial Aid are based on a student’s demonstrated financial need, as a student’s merit-based qualities are reviewed during the admissions process.

Kerriann - Franklin Lakes, NJ

I hear that ND provides shuttle buses at Break Times to O'Hare airport. Is this true, and how often (how many) are run?

ND Admissions

Hi Kerriann,

There are buses that run between Notre Dame and both Midway and O’Hare airports every day of the week, year round. However, around breaks throughout the year there may be enough students who take the bus to make it a direct trip to the airport (without making stops in towns along the way). CoachUSA offers the service, and the pick up/drop off location is right by the bookstore. A round trip ticket is $63.

Erin - Littleton, CO

If an engineer studies abroad, is there any free time in their schedule to sight-see and get to know the place or will most of the time be spent studying?

ND Admissions

Sight-seeing and becoming familiar with the culture is definitely an important part of the experience. While engineers may have a tighter schedule due to all of their required courses, students generally take a lighter course load while abroad. Engineers normally try and take their university requirements while abroad (Philosophy, Theology) and there will be plenty of time to do things other than study.

Ryan - Pittsburgh, PA

In terms of class scheduling for next year, will we get an advisor to help us choose our classes? I'm still pretty uncertain about what I want to major in and don't want to waste/take the wrong classes my freshman year.

ND Admissions

Ryan, a First Year of Studies advisor will be assigned to you in June and will assist you with initial course selection during the summer.

Shannon - Shoreview, MN

I know a lot of the intramural teams are dorm based. Are all sports, then, split up into a men's division and a women's division? Are there any activities where a team is comprised of both men and women?

ND Admissions

There are lots of co-ed or “CoRec” sports including basketball, broomball, football, indoor soccer, softball, tennis, volleyball, intertube waterpolo, and more. My favorites are broomball and intertube waterpolo; be sure to sign up early as their schedules fill up fast!

Evan - Washington, IL

How good is your Economics major? How does it compare with programs from other premier universities throughout the country?

ND Admissions

Our econ program gives students both the foundation in scientific analysis and the background of social perspectives to understand the complexities of economics. This prepares students for a variety of future pursuits, including graduate programs in economics and public policy, law school, and managerial positions in finance.

Michael - Geneseo, IL

What is an award letter?

ND Admissions

Hi Michael,

A Financial Aid Award Letter outlines the aid you are eligible to receive for the academic year. At Notre Dame, the Financial Aid Award Letter will list the type of aid (i.e. loans, scholarship), the amount you will receive for each semester, and the total amount you will receive for the year. You have the option to accept or decline each source of aid on the letter.

Marguerite - Fox Point, WI

Are major-minor combinations possible across schools? (for example, a major in economics with a minor in theology)

ND Admissions

It is possible to have major-minor combinations across schools. You just need to have approval from both department heads.

John - Easton, CT

This semester, I'm taking Calculus IV at a local university! While I don't intend to be a math major (and dip into the nuances of differential equations) with the math requirement of the First Year Studies core, what might my options be?

ND Admissions

John, you would certainly be welcome to take additional math courses at ND. Your first year advisor would help you to discuss your interests with the math department.

Michael - Geneseo, IL

On a campus visit I took, a guide said that the average debt for a graduated student is 15,000-17,000 dollars. Is this true?

ND Admissions

Hi Michael,

The information is close…..here is the most current information:

The typical range of need-based student debt incurred by graduates is $17,000 to $21,000.

Historically, graduates of the University of Notre Dame are very responsible borrowers, as is reflected in the University’s most recent Stafford Loan default rate of less than 1% (0.1%).

Chrissy - Montville, NJ

Do athletes have preferred scheduling and are Professors willing to work with athletes who miss class due to a sporting competition?

ND Admissions

Athletes are advised in a similar fashion to all other students, and while professors understand sport schedules and demands, the class assignments, tests and papers will still be required. No reduction of class expectattions will occur.

Gregory - Peabody, MA

Which dining hall is considered to have the better food: North or South?

ND Admissions

When students are asked this question they usually have a pretty strong opinion (I think North is far superior). However, truth be told, the food at both dining halls is generally the same, it all comes from Notre Dame Food Services. There are a few differences between the two; North has a make your own pizza line, pasta stir fry, and a larger salad bar for example. What is usually boils down to is how close you are to either one. In the dead of winter, you’ll definitely be choosing to eat at the dining hall that is closest to you.

Diana - Jacksonville, FL

Should we contact the school if there is a decrease in income from 2008 to 2009 for the purpose of financial aid?

ND Admissions

Hi Diana,

Please contact the Office of Financial Aid (finaid@nd.edu) if there will be a decrease in your family’s income from 2008 to 2009. As you may know, the FAFSA and CSS/Financial Aid PROFILE uses 2008 income infomration; any changes for 2009 will not be reflected. You are welcome to send a letter explaining these changes to the Office of Financial Aid via mail, fax, or email. This letter will then be added to your file and reviewed along with the infomration provided on the FAFSA and CSS/Financial Aid PROFILE.

Robert - Los Angeles, CA

What can students do for exercise in the winter?

ND Admissions

Students have the option of working out at any of the facilities on campus and most of the dorms have gyms so you don’t have to brave the cold. Though you will oftentimes see people running outside at all hours and temperatures – I saw a person running at 2 a.m. in a snowstorm!

Michael - Geneseo, IL

What does the swim test include? And how hard would it be for someone who can only do one stroke?

ND Admissions

Hi Michael,

Here’s more information about the swim test, but basically, if you can swim down to one end of the pool and back without struggling, you’ll pass the test.

Jackie - Ft. Lauderdale, FL

This question is for a Financial Aid Counselor: I submitted the FAFSA and CSS forms on Jan 1. I will prepare my taxes early. How do I submit the tax documents which you require? 2. We enjoy a good income but I am still concerned about being able to afford the tuition and fees. I received the Expected Family Contribution report. How does ND use that to determine how much assistance to offer as part of the financial aid package. 3. If I prepare and submit my taxes by the first week in February, when can I expect to hear from ND regarding their decision regarding financial aid? Thank you.

ND Admissions

Hi Jackie,

Notre Dame uses the College Board IDOC process to collect the tax documents and verification form. You should receive information electronically around February 5 from the College Board with further instructions on how to submit your documents through this service.

Assistance at Notre Dame is based upon demonstrated financial need. The “simple” formula for determining financial need is: Cost of Attendance – family contribution = financial need. We use the information from the CSS/PROFILE application to determine need for University Scholarship. The PROFILE application looks at much more information and the family contribution from that application is often less than the FAFSA calculation. Each family is considered individually. The financial aid package typically includes self- help (work and loan are likely) and University Scholarship.

Early Action students can expect to hear from our office by mid-March regarding financial aid (assuming that all documents have been submitted which were requested).

Kristin - Streator, IL

When and how do admitted freshman apply for housing?

ND Admissions

Kristin, all first year students are guaranteed housing. There is an on-line application process that is explained to incoming students in May when they first set-up their ND computer accounts.

Matt - Nashville, TN

Does the order of colleges listed on the FAFSA matter?

ND Admissions

Hi Matt,

Great question. The order in which you list your colleges on the FAFSA does not make a difference, at least for our purposes. The most important thing is to be sure to list Notre Dame’s school code (001840) on your FAFSA!

Matt - Westfield, NJ

I have been accepted to Notre Dame and am trying to keep my grades the same as past years, but I would like to know if dropping a class would jeopardize my acceptance.

ND Admissions

Hi Matt,

I would suggest strongly that you contact the Office of Undergraduate Admissions to be certain your discontinuance of a course is accepatable. As a policy, dropping senior classes is not looked upon favorably, and you would not want to make a choice that might jeopardize your admission. Just call the Admissions Office, and ask to speak to an available counselor.

Beau - Ridgefield, CT

Is there credit given for the AP Computer Science Course/Test?

ND Admissions

Beau, there is no credit given for AP Computer Science at this time. AP standards are reviewed annually and are subject to change at the beginning of each new academic year.

Shannon - Shoreview, MN

I come from a school with a strong emphasis on volunteerism. Are there any programs that encourage ND students to tutor or mentor grade school students in the South Bend area?

ND Admissions

Something that is great about Notre Dame is its commitment to service. 80% of students participate in some sort of volunteer activity while they are here on campus, and there are a lot of ways to get involved. Notre Dame’s Center for Social Concerns is an amazing resource to help students get started with any level of involvement with a large number of organizations and schools throughout the South Bend area. There are also many opportunities to do service trips over spring, fall, summer and winter break, both domestic and internationally. Other than the CSC many students take advantage of various service clubs such as Circle-K, or participate in service events within their residence halls.

Adam - New Palestine, IN

What is the significance of the designation of "Notre Dame Scholar?"

ND Admissions

Adam,

Congratulations on being distinguished as a Notre Dame Scholar. This is a recognition that we give at the time of admission to those admitted who are some of the most highly accomplished students (about the top 20%) in what is already a tremendously distinguished incoming class. You are encouraged to explore and take advantage of our academic programs, undergraduate research opportunities, international studies, and much more!

Will - Houston, TX

How tough is it to fit in marching band (with labs, etc) for an Engineering or Science major?

ND Admissions

Hi Will,

The marching band does require quite a bit of time, as they practice at least 2 hours/5 days a week. Regardless of major, students find that with good time management skills it is very possible to maintain grades while attending daily practices.

Karen Lynn - New Canaan, CT

Are any of the newer dorms equipped with upgraded air filtration systems, such as a HEPA filter, for highly allergic students?

ND Admissions

Karen,

This is a good question, but unfortunately I do not know the answer to it. I do not believe that the newer dorms have HEPA filters included in the air system. However, I would contact the Office of Residence Life & Housing to get the correct answer. Regardless, Notre Dame often works with students with unique physical or medical needs and can accommodate most requests.

Alexia - ,

Are all the first year students required to go to Liberal Arts College? What if I have already chosed my major?

ND Admissions

Hello Alexia, All students enter Notre Dame via the First Year of Studies regardless of their certainty of what they want to study. This first year allows students to explore, discern and determine their majors prior to entering the various colleges here as sophomores. While you may feel certain of your major path, this first year will allow you to confirm your intention and take introductory courses which will confirm your ability in this academic discipline.

Stephen - midland, MI

What is the average yearly loan given to students who need financial need?

ND Admissions

Hi Stephen,

For the 2007/2008 academic year, the average need-based loan was $3,291. In order to determine your eligibility for need-based assistance, you will want to be sure to file both the FAFSA and the CSS/Financial Aid PROFILE by the February 15 priority deadline (if you haven’t yet done so).

Karen - Ortonville, MI

Regarding the FAFSA...obviously I need to make updates.. I am still waiting for my W-2 forms...I also took a big hit on other revenues of money..is that also supposed to be updated on the FAFSA

ND Admissions

Hi Karen,

There is an earlier posting regarding the Notre Dame policy on making corrections / updates to the FAFSA. We will be happy to make the updates to your applications (FAFSA & CSS/PROFILE) once we review the tax documents you submit (through the College Board IDOC process).

I’m not quite sure I understand your comment on the loss of other revenues. If you are referring to a decrease in adjusted gross income, that change should be reflected on your tax return. If you are referring to decline in assets, the federal guidelines require that assets be reported as of the date of the application and are not to be changed (unless you made an error in the amount)
