James Griggs - Stilwell, KS

I like to play sports and stay active. Are there clubs and intramural sports that I could join?

ND Admissions

Are there ever! Notre Dame has one of the most active campuses - we have two student-only gyms, a myriad of clubs sports (everything from broomball to running groups to water polo) and a vibrant interhall and intramural system. There are 28 dorms on campus, each with its own mascot and color, and each dorm will have a team for many different sports - including tackle football for men and flag for women, in which the championship game is in the stadium every year. Additionally, there are intramurals played indoors and outdoors for almost every sport (including dodgeball) for which you and a group of friends would form a team.

Cody - Fairport, NY

Should I even apply although I got an 1160 on my SATs?

ND Admissions

Hi Cody, You should take the SAT again to be more competitive in our applicant pool. The mid-50% SAT range for our admitted students last year was 1370 – 1490 (Critical Reading + Math).

Bianca - Arcadia, CA

How do prospective students with financial issues pay for tuition and how good is the financial aid?

ND Admissions

Hi Bianca,

Students wishing to apply for financial aid should complete both the FAFSA and the CSS/Financial Aid PROFILE. These online forms take into account not only a family’s income but other factors that may affect a family’s financial situation. If a family is experiencing certain financial issues that are not covered by the questions on the FAFSA or the CSS/Financial Aid PROFILE, they are welcome to submit a letter to our office explaning their unique circumstances. We will take these circumstances into account when reviewing a student’s application for financial aid. All aid at the University of Notre Dame is based on a family’s demonstrated financial need and it is our policy to meet a student’s demonstrated need. Students use a variety of sources to pay for tuition including University and outside scholarships, loans, and work study. Some families also choose to take advantage of a Monthly Payment Plan offered through Sallie Mae. For more information on this plan, please visit our website at http://www.nd.edu/~finaid/undergraduate/other/monthly_payment_plan.shtml.

Kristen - Plymouth, MA

Are there many opportunities for community outreach and are the students actively involved in them?

ND Admissions

The majority of our students participate in community service programs while they are at Notre Dame. Many of these are organized through the Center for Social Concerns on campus.

Vincent - North Andover, Massachusetts

Hi, could you tell me the percentage (or a general observation if not available) of students whose test scores were below the average that were still accepted to Notre Dame? Also its obvious there's a lot of school pride at the football games, but does that stretch over to the school's other sports as well?

ND Admissions

Hi Vincent,

The average is not the best figure to give you for standardized test scores—let’s go with the middle 50%. Last year, admitted students had a middle 50% on the SAT (Critical Reading and Math) of 1370-1490. On the ACT, those numbers were between 32-34. So, 25% of our students scored lower than a 1370 or 32, 25% of our students scored higher than a 1490 or 34.

Qiu - Haikou,

I am an international applicant from China, and my family contribution is not enough to cover the tuition.May I get admitted first and pay my tuition by campus work afterwards?

ND Admissions

Good evening. For any highly competitive and admissible international student we will take a look at the Certificate of Finances and the percentage of the total four year cost of attendance that a student’s parents can cover. If possible we will offer a student an international financial aid package that will cover the remaining amount for in order for us to be able to issue a F-1 visa for an international student to study at the University of Notre Dame the U.S. government requires a coverage of all four years.

Matthew - Adrian, MI

I started my application on Commonapp.org before the November 1 early decision deadline and it says that my application was due Nov 1. I've since completed the application. Can I still submit it, or do I have to start over with a new application?

ND Admissions

Matthew,

You can still submit that same application. There is no need to start over with a new application.

Muhammad - Karachi, Sindh

In the International Student Financial Aid Application, there is a question that, 'Is there a source of emergency funds once you arrive in the U.S.?'. If there is a source, what should be the amount in U.S. dollars? Should it be close to the amount that I am able to pay for the fees?

ND Admissions

Hi Muhammad – While there is not a magic number for “emergency funds,” we would encourage at least the same amount as a plane ticket from Notre Dame to your home.

Mercedes - Tarija,

I would like to know if the essay of the supplement must be eye-catching and all or I just answer the question in a common essay

ND Admissions

I would say you definitely want to stand out in the process. My favorite part of my undergraduate experience was interacting with the amazing people here and we like to admit interesting people. An essay where your personality really starts to come out is always much more enjoyable to read than one that reads like a recycled character analysis from the Great Gatsby.

Pablo - ,

Should only students who have already been admitted apply for financial aid? or do we have to apply for financial aid at the same time that we apply for general acceptance?

ND Admissions

Hi Pablo,

The priority deadline for the submission of the FAFSA and the CSS/PROFILE for freshmen is February 15, 2009. We do not recommend that students wait for their notice of admission to complete the financial aid applicaiton process. If your applications have been received by Notre Dame at the time of your admission, we will be able to prepare a financial aid decision for you rather than waiting to receive your applications in late March or April.

Naser - Safat,

Hi, I will be applying to your university but there seems to be a problem with my school's system. It seems that due to that problem, my school can't get my transcript correctly. They are struggling with the software and tried to contact the developer, but no luck yet. I am just wondering of there is a solution to that problem or is it just the end of the line. I mean can I send final report cards of my previous years in high school and my most recent report card for this year ( I am a high-school senior). Thank you very much and I would really appreciate it if you would help because I don't want to jeopardize my chances of attending the university.

ND Admissions

Naser,

While your school continues to try to submit information online, they can fax us any school information in the meantime. Our office fax number is 574-631-8865.

I would also encourage them to contact the Common Application web site for a solution to their problem: Common App School Forms Help Desk

John - Great Falls, VA

I've heard rumors that after the football season, the student spirit is dead. Is this true?

ND Admissions

Students at Notre Dame are enthusiastic year round! We have highly ranked basketball, soccer, and hockey programs, so students have a lot of fun supporting the school. Outside of athletics, students participate in dorm spirit events year round.

Cong - , China

Hello, Does ND offer interview in Beijing?

ND Admissions

Interviews are not a part of our admissions process, so you don’t have to worry about them!

Cong - BJ,

Do I need to send the supporting documents that cover my four years expense? Or just one year?

ND Admissions

Hi Cong,

Please send documents showing all four years—we need to see the full amount before we admit you. When we admit you to Notre Dame, we are making a four year commitment to you, not just a one year commitment, so we want to make sure you have all four years before we make that commitment.

Sarah - Garden City, NY

What is the a cappella singing scene like at Notre Dame? Is there a mixed (male-female) group on campus? If not, would it be hard to start a group?

ND Admissions

There are a number of a cappella groups on campus—including single sex groups and our mixed group, Half-time. They’re all fantastic, and I believe both Half-time, Harmonia (one of the women’s group) and the Undertones (the most prominent men’s group) can be found on iTunes.

Regardless, it IS easy to start clubs, should you find another area of interest!

Xinlun - Nanjing,

Dear admission officers: I'm an international student from China. Although I have been longing to get into University of Notre Dame for a long time, I hav e never had the chance to go to this school in person to experience its splendid campus and dense academic atmosphere. So, I would like to ask you a question about the entire atmosphere on the campus of University of Notre Dame. As people who work in U Notre Dame, do you frequently feel calm and touched by the religious sense in U Notre Dame, with so many religious statues, constructions and special occassions? If you do, would you please tell me how does that feel in just a few words. Can you sense a kind of spiritual harmony? Thank you very much!

ND Admissions

Xinlun,

Spirituality is a very special and unique aspect of campus life. Many people do feel a sense of tranquility and peace as they walk around campus. Students, faculty, and visitors can experience and explore their spirituality throughout various sights on campus, including the Basilica of the Sacred Heart and the Grotto. While we are proud to be a Catholic university, it is our intent that students and faculty grow in their own faith journeys during their time here. Religion is never something that is forced upon anyone – it is truly what you make of it.

Joseph - Granada Hills, CA

Does the University of Notre Dame accept an optional letter of recommendation? If so, what are the instructions on how to submit it? Thank you.

ND Admissions

Hi Joseph,

Thanks for joining us tonight! We accept additional letters of recommendation, however, we do not encourage them as they more often than not do not tell us something we don’t already know. I would only encourage that you submit an additional letter of recommendation if you truly feel as though the individual writing the letter on your behalf has something to share with us that we wouldn’t have learned about in another part of the application and is something we need to know about to make an admissions decision. Additional letters of recommendation can be submitted to: University of Notre Dame, Office of Undergraduate Admissions, 220 Main Building, Notre Dame, IN 46556. Best of luck!

Thomas - Saratoga, CA

What kind of need based financial aid can Notre Dame offer and what are the necessary actions and important dates to know?

ND Admissions

Hi Thomas – The University of Notre Dame provides need based financial aid in the form of loans, work and scholarships. We require that you complete the FAFSA and the CSS/Financial Aid PROFILE by our priority deadline on an annual basis. The priority deadline for freshmen applicants for the 2009/2010 Academic Year is February 15, 2009. Please visit our website for further details: http://www.nd.edu/~finaid/apply/index.shtml

Tatenda - Harare,

is there any additional form besides international student's financial aid application which i need to submitt when applying for financial aid

ND Admissions

Hi Tatenda,

The complete financial aid application procedures for international student’s is located on our website at: http://www.nd.edu/~finaid/undergraduate/other/international_student_financial_aid.shtml

Kristen - Plymouth, MA

What are the requirements for the core classes?

ND Admissions

Hello Kristen from MA – a favorite state of mine!

The core consists of two semesters of English, mathematics and natural science during the freshman year, but many students will earn AP credit and bypass some of these required classes accordingly. All Notre Dame first year students take two semesters of physical education, and must complete two semesters of philisophy and theology by their graduation day.

Hope you plan to apply soon!

Jiwoo - Maple Ridge,

Well, to be more specific with my question, I heard that international students are not considered for the entrance scholarship in early decision, then, even though I am accepted in early decision, I am still going to be competing with regular students for the scholarship?

ND Admissions

Hi Jiwoo,

Financial aid for all Notre Dame students is need-based. If, as an international student, you were accepted during Early Action, that means you did not demonstrate any financial need and will not be considered for financial aid. If you have specific questions about your situation, it might be easier to e-mail me at morourk1@nd.edu

Leah - Boston, MA

Would it be hard for a very liberal student to study political science at a conservative, Catholic University?

ND Admissions

Thanks for your question—Notre Dame students run the gamut of political affiliations, and you will meet students from of every viewpoint. Notre Dame itself is more conservative on some issues and liberal on others.

That being said, you will certainly be able to study political science at Notre Dame—it is, first and foremost, a University. As such, it upholds strict standards of academic freedom, and has a faculty whose opinions differ accordingly. I think you will enjoy the challenge of a rigorous academic department that encourages dialogue between opposing views.

Wilson - Darien, CT

Is it possible for non-music majors to take classes in music and participate in ensembles, particularly jazz and marching band?

ND Admissions

Many of our students who are not music majors do participate in the University Bands. These students will also be able to take some courses in music.

Anh - Falls Church, VA

I just came to America in 2007. Do I need to take the TOELF if my SAT score is high enough? Is there any way that my TOELF can be waived?

ND Admissions

Hi Anh,

Any student who does not speak English as a first language is required to sit for the TOEFL. We can waive the TOEFL requirement if you have scored a 600 or higher on the Critical Reading section of the SAT I.

Janet - Terre Haute, IN

My daughter has several different interests for her major but still is not certain for sure, what do you recommend declaring as a major if a student is undecided? thank you so much

ND Admissions

We recommend that she chooses one area where she has the most interest. During her first year, your daughter will take courses in many disciplines, giving her a well rounded liberal arts education. So, it is okay for her to switch majors or interest areas.

Isaiah - Los Angeles, CA

My family and I have economic hardships. If admitted to the University of Notre Dame, how will the University help me pay for my education?

ND Admissions

Dear Isaiah,

I am sorry to hear that your family is having financial difficulty. I would encourage you to complete the financial aid application process. You may learn more about our financial aid application process on our website at financialaid.nd.edu

The University is committed to meeting the demonstrated financial need of students who have been admitted to the University. We meet need through a combination of resources which typically include University Scholarship, work and student loans. The amount of the package varies depending upon financial need. This year, freshmen who qualified for need-based aid received an average award of $23,000. Taking into account all students from families below the U.S. median family income, the average award was $35,400. Scholarships from community or national programs, together with loans and campus jobs, reduce costs even further.

Henry - Wuhan, China

Hi, I wonder how many Chinese students did you admitted in the last a few years, and what specific qualities of them has led to the admission decision.

ND Admissions

Good evening. This year thus far we of 37 students that have applied from China, 15 have been admitted. We look for six main things in an application: (1) high school transcript, (2) rigor of schedule, (3) standardized exams (SAT/ACT/TOEFL), (4) extra-curricular activities, (5) letter of recommendation and (6) your essays.

Stanley - Singapore,

Is it necessary for me to submit a bank transcript to show my financial status?

ND Admissions

Hi Stanley – Yes, it is necessary to submit “proof” of your financial status with your Ceritification of Finances. A bank transcript would be sufficient documentation.

Adeel - Wharton, NJ

Does ND require SAT II subject tests in any area or specific ones

ND Admissions

ND does NOT require SAT II subject tests; if you’ve taken them anyways, they can be helpful to boost your application or to gain course credit, so they are worth submitting.

Prianthi - Kolkata, West Bengal

I am thankful for this opportunity to contact ND. I've already sent in my application and I've received e-mails from ND saying that I could get financial aid. I would like to know what exactly I have to do to get the financial aid. I am really very keen about ND, but I don't think I'll be able to afford it without financial aid.

ND Admissions

Hi Prianthi,

Prospective First Year students wishing to be considered for limited need-based financial assistance must first complete an International Certification of Finances along with an International Student Financial Aid Application. Based upon a review of academic qualifications, financial need and availability of student aid resources, an applicant may be considered for financial assistance including a self-help component of a student loan and student employment along with University scholarship assistance. The Certification of Finances and the CSS International Student Financial Aid Application will be reviewed along with the student’s admission application.

You can find links for the International Student Certification of Finances and the CSS International Student Financial Aid Application on our website at http://www.nd.edu/~finaid/undergraduate/other/international_student_financial_aid.shtml.

Kristen - Plymouth, MA

What is the campus like on football game days?

ND Admissions

AMAZING

Football weekends are nearly indescribable! The excitement and energy on campus is second to none—you’ll be hard pressed to find a place with the spirit of Notre Dame!

Wilson - Darien, CT

Although I am applying in the regular applicant pool, Notre Dame is very high on my list. Is there a recommended way to communicate that in my application? Thank you

ND Admissions

Absolutely—we have an optional “Final Note” section of our application that asks your to explain your interest in ND.

Kane - The Woodlands, TX

I want to study engineering but am not sure of the specific area within engineering. What should I indicate on the application? I also am currently involved in Habitat for Humanity. Is there a way I can continue to participate in this organization at ND?

ND Admissions

You can look into the engineering programs Here . Choose one of the programs for your application. During the first year, engineering intents take similar courses. You can narrow down the specific area by working with your advisor once you are on campus.

There is a Notre Dame Chapter of Habitat that we welcome first year students to join.

Michelle - Plano, TX

Hi, I have an art portfolio that I want to submit as a supplement to my application, but I'm not considering majoring in art. The website says that they "encourage this only to those students interested in studying art.." So is there any benefit from sending my slides in?

ND Admissions

Anything that can help distinguish you from all of the other applicants in out pool is helpful. I would include it even if you aren’t planning on majoring in art. All of those supplemental submissions can only help your application.

Rebecca - Fond du Lac, WI

Does the Dec. 31st deadline apply to standardized test scores as well, or is it possible for me to take a test in January or February and have the score submitted for consideration?

ND Admissions

Hi Rebecca,

Thanks for joining us tonight! The December 31 deadline is the deadline for your portion of the application to be submitted. We will accept the teacher evaluation, counselor report, transcript and standardized tests after December 31 and will even consider scores through the February sittings for the ACT and SAT. Best of luck with the application!

Lara - Springfield, VA

My GPA is a 3.5, but I'm a really hard working person. I have so many ambitions and goals, what would I have to do to get in? My grades were certainly affected by some emotional and physical obstacles during tenth and eleventh grade. How could I get accepted?

ND Admissions

Hello from ND, Lara – we review all aspects of your file – academic, social (school/community involvement), written expression and school support. If you have some distinctive circumstances to share, please do so in your essay or final note to us as it will help us understand your uniques set of circumstances. We are very interested in your goals and aspirations – and you determined nature…share everything with us!

Rangan - Troy, MI

If my Notre Dame supplement essay is slightly over the word limit (like 550-600 words), is that okay?

ND Admissions

That should be fine, but do your best to make your essay concise. Edit, edit and then edit some more!

Marina - Irvine, CA

I have already asked my counselor and one teacher to write a letter of recommendation for me but I was thinking of asking my youth minister, who is a ND alum to write one for me. I know that ND doesn't like reading extra recommendation letters, but would the fact that he is a ND alum help me in any way?

ND Admissions

Marina,

We only need one letter of recommendation from a teacher and one from a guidance counselor. If there’s someone else who can give us a different perspective about your academic accomplishments and potential, then its okay to send another letter. However, if you think that extra letter won’t add anything about your academic performance or will reiterate what your teacher will say, its probably best not to send it. A letter from a Notre Dame alum will not provide an extra “boost” in the admissions process.

Gabriela - Lubbock, Tx

Is there a separate application for the Honors program?

ND Admissions

There is a very small (>100 people per class) Honors Program for students in select majors. While it does not define the experience, it provides a few perks, including guaranteed summer research funding. Professors who head up the program will contact students in the late spring inviting them to fill out a brief, separate application to join.

Rachel Zajac - Saint John, IN

Hi! Could you explain to me what demonstrated financial need means? I am the oldest of 6 children. My mom is a homemaker. My dad is a chiropractor. My parents have a little better than average income some years and other years it is average. My dad owns his office, which he is not going to sell to help pay for my college. I also have a possiblilty of an athletic scholarship for Cross Country if I come to Notre Dame as well as maybe getting other scholarships based on my academics. Could you explain to me how all of this plays in? Is there a point to applying for other scholarships if Notre Dame will meet my financial need? And, how is that financial need determined? My parents went through the Purdue financial aid estimator and it said that their contribution should be about $12,000. My mom said "In your dreams are we giving you this much money for school because then we wouldn't have money for anything else." And I have to think of the brothers and sisters coming to college as well. Thanks, Rachel Zajac

ND Admissions

Hi Rachel,

FInancial need is demonstrated through an annual application process. Notre Dame requires completion of the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) and the CSS/PROFILE applications. The applications use a standard formula to evaluate financial need. There are many factors involved in evaluating financial need, Rachel, so please understand that there is no specific “cutoff” when a family is not eligibile.

If you are interested in pursuing athletic aid for Cross Country, I suggest you contact the track coach to discuss the possibility of athletic aid. Athletic aid is considered as a source of financial aid in the total aid package.

I would really encourage you to complete your admission application (if you haven’t done so already) and plan to complete our financial aid process. Many of our students find that, with our financial aid packages, that the cost of attending Notre Dame is much more reasonable than the family thinks it will be.
