Clare - Tampa, FL
My mom and I plan to visit ND to see the school but primarily to meet with people in the financial aid office. When is the best time for us to come up?
ND Admissions
Hi Clare,
Our office is open Monday through Friday from 8:00 a.m. until 5:00 p.m. Eastern Standard Time. Our front desk should be able to assist you with most questions, but if you have specific concerns we do have a financial aid counselor on call at all times that would be able to meet with you.
We look forward to meeting you and hope you enjoy your visit to ND!
Victoria - Austin, TX
Is there a large work-study program at ND?
ND Admissions
Hi Victoria,
There are many job opportunities available at the University. If you are interested in learning more about our student employment program, please visit the student employment website at: http://www.nd.edu/%7Efinaid/student_employment/
Ahmad - Islamabad, Punjab
Dear Sir,
I am studying in Roots School System Islamabad Pakistan. I have achieved a B grade in O levels english and I have also scored 580 in the critical reading section of the SAT 1. I have studied english in high school and secondary school. Do I still need to take the TOEFL exam?
Regards,
Ahmad Azhar
Applicant for class of 2013
ND Admissions
Good evening. We recommend that all students who score below a 600 on the SAT-CR take the TOEFL exam however it is not required for admission. Nonetheless, the more supporting scores we have the better decision we can make.
Christina - Boca Raton, FL
If admitted, how do you apply for an athletic team?
ND Admissions
Hi Christina,
Each team holds tryouts differently; you will have to contact the coach once you get here for specific information.
Catherine - Randolph, NJ
I understand that Notre Dame picks room mates completely random. From your experience, does this method seem to be effective?
ND Admissions
Hi Catherine,
Thanks for your interest in the University of Notre Dame! While it may seem a little bit scary that housing is a completely random process here as Notre Dame, it works out just fine for the vast majority of students . Every first year student is randomly assigned to a residence hall and randomly assigned to a first year roommate. The only thing that is certain in the process is that your roommate will be of your same gender (all residence halls are single sex, but mixed in every other way) and from a different zip code. When I was a freshman, I was randomly assigned to live with a girl from Buffalo, New York. We got along great and so well in fact, that we lived together all four years! To this day she remains one of my very best friends. I was very fortunate to have been randomly assigned to such a great roommate and friend. Keep in mind that after the first year, students are allowed to pick their own roommate and rooms, so if things don’t work out, you’re not stuck with the same person for all four years!
Everistus - Abuja, Nigeria
I saw somewhere on Notre Dame website's that if an applicant is interested in participating in any sport he/she should contact the sports coach. Does that only apply to those who want to apply for sports scholarships or for all who intend on doing any form of sport at Notre Dame?
ND Admissions
Applicants who are strongly and seriously considering playing a varsity sport should contact the sport’s respective coach. If you are just interested in playing a sport but not at the varsity level, there is a huge intramural and club sports program here at Notre Dame. You do not have to contact anyone about those—you will receive tons of information on how to sign up once you get here!
Genette - Huntington, NY
How important are SAT scores?
ND Admissions
With the size of our applicant pool, every aspect of the application matters; it’s highly likely that there’s someone in the mix that looks exactly like you on paper and has a higher SAT or ACT score, has performed better at his/her respective high school, etc. I advise every prospective student that I meet, that he/she need to do everything they can to beef up his/her profile in every way possible. It isn’t over until all of the decisions have been mailed.
Genette - Huntington, NY
What is the average GPA you admit?
ND Admissions
Hi Genette – You know, we will review your GPA in the context of your own high school’s evaluation process, but we do not recalculate GPAs to achieve a uniform systerm. Therefore, a 3.5 on a 4.0 scale can mean something quite different on a 6.0 scale…..to give you a sense of accomplishment, most admiitted applicants have A/B+ grades in a majority of the more rigorous courses offered at their schools.
Alan - The Woodlands, Tx
Is it true that the theology program at Notre Dame has been reprimanded by the Vatican? Is it also true that there are protestant teachers teaching theology classes, and are there really also pro-abortion priests at Notre Dame?
ND Admissions
Alan,
Our theology program at Notre Dame is perceived as one of the best faculties in the world, mainly because of the quality of scholarship that has been done. We are unaware of any “reprimand” from the Vatican. Yes, some of our faculty members are non-Catholic, which makes sense since we are a University and not a Catholic seminary. We are unaware of pro-abortion priests on our faculty.
Fangzhou - Shenzhen,
How has the economic crisis affected your financial aid? Have your financial aid policy changed recently?
ND Admissions
Dear Fangzhou,
The financial aid for international students is based upon financial need as demonstrated by the family at the time of their admission. Unlike domestic students, international students financial aid package is determined for four years so very few of our currently enrolled international students have expressed financial concerns based upon the changes in world economy.
katherine - fairfield, ct
How is ND's art program? Is it very competitive?
ND Admissions
The arts programs are fantastic—both visual and performing. They are not competitive as far as joining in because you will apply to the University as a whole and then pick your major once you’re enrolled. You can also take arts classes independent of your major.
Riley Hall is home to our Art Studio, Art History and Design departments. You can read more about them and see some samples of work here:http://www.nd.edu/~art/index.html
We have a new performing arts center, the “DPAC” that shows both student productions and national performing acts, as well as movies, and we also have other venues across campus that host a variety of shows, from rock concerts to Shakespeare shorts.
Le - ,
Will the financial crisis influenced the financial aid to international students?
Thanks!
ND Admissions
Hi Le,
Despite the ongoing financial crisis, we are still prepared to offer international students qualifying for aid a combination of scholarship, loans, and work study. It is important to note that financial aid for international students is awarded upfront and aid packages for international students do not change over the course of their four (or five, if in a University approved program) years at the University.
Rachel - Hurst, TX
I noticed Notre Dame doesn't have a Nutrition major, what would be a close alternative?
ND Admissions
The closest to nutrition would probably be Biological Sciences. I’m sure you could find some classes within the major that brought you closer to nutrition, but unfortunately, as you know, we do not have that as an actual major.
Leticia - Silver Spring, MD
Hello
I wanted to ask you if it required that we take the ACT in order to be accepted?
ND Admissions
Leticia,
We require either the SAT or ACT for admission. Therefore, if you have already taken the SAT, there is no need to take the ACT.
Christina - Houston, TX
When will the financial aid information be sent out?
ND Admissions
Hi Christina –
Regular action admitted students would typically expect to receive their financial aid award letter around late March to early April. This timeframe is contingent upon students completing their financial aid applications by the February 15th priority deadline and the receipt of supporting documentation by the March 1st deadline. Please visit our website for more information: http://www.nd.edu/~finaid/apply/index.shtml
Jez - , CHina
1.Do you cover full demonstrated need of international students, if admitted? If not, what is the maximum percentage of aid granted to international students?
2. Would asking for financial aid be a big disadvantage in getting in for international students? If yes, does it help to raise family contribution(because I really can't pay for the full cost), or do you only distinguish those who apply for any financial aid and those who do not?
Thanks!
ND Admissions
Good evening. We are need-aware in our international admissions process and thus the amount that can be contributed towards a student’s four year cost of attendance does play a part in the evaluation of an application. However, we do offer international financial aid awards ranging from 10% to 90% of the four year cost of attendance as well.
Kate - ,
Is there a quota for number of admitted freshman per declared major?
ND Admissions
Hi Kate,
There is no quota because you are applying directly to the University, not to your intended major or that college. We ask for an intended major for statistical purposes, but we are not going to admit or deny you because of that major, nor will we hold you to that major once you get here.
Mitch - Murrysville, PA
I will have my application completed this week but my high school counselor is off until January 5th. Is this going to cause me to miss the Dec 31 deadline?
ND Admissions
Mitch,
As long as you submit your application by the deadline, December 31st, your application will not be considered late. It’s not usual for materials from the high school to arrive after the deadline.
Kathleen - White Plains, NY
Do you place a strong emphasis on participation in community service when reviewing applications?
ND Admissions
Kathleen,
Community service is certainly something that is appealing to us. At least 90% of the student body at Notre Dame participates in some sort of service during the school year, so it is a big deal here. Having service as part of your activity list certainly doesn’t hurt.
Jon - Madison, Indiana
Can my counselor and teacher send in their portion of the application (transcripts, secondary reports, etc.) before I submit my common application supplement? Do I need to submit the base portion of the common application before they send in their sections?
ND Admissions
Hi Jon,
As we get your materials, we place them in a folder and wait until we have EVERYTHING before we consider it complete. It always helps us if everything is sent in together, but we won’t hold it against you if things come in piece by piece!
Rachel - Hurst, TX
Hello I am an undergraduate application and I have a few questions: I recently took the SAT in December, should I wait until the scores are released to send in the application? Also what is a good ballpark score that you are looking for on the SAT and ACT? And finally, how important are AP scores in admission decisions? Thank you!
ND Admissions
AP scores are used as supplemental information if a student submits them. We look favorably on 4’s and 5’s during the evaluation process.
Anne - Rancho Santa Fe, CA
Once a student is admitted into the College of Arts and Sciences, after one year of attending the university, can he or she transfer into the Mendoza School of Business?
ND Admissions
Anne,
While we encourage students to explore the various colleges and majors offered here, we recommend that they have a solid idea of their intended college by the end of the first year. Although this decision is not set in stone, it becomes more and more difficult for a student to complete his or her undergraduate degree in four years if the switch occurs later in the college career (junior or senior year). It is our hope that you study what you truly enjoy while you are here at Notre Dame.
Katrina - Falmouth, ME
Do you consider the writing portion of the SAT?
ND Admissions
Hi Katrina,
We see your writing score, and it can enhance your application, but we are more concerned about your Critical Reading and Math scores.
Chelsea - Brandon, FL
What should I do if my school doesn't send my transcripts before December 31st?
ND Admissions
Chelsea,
The December 31st deadline pertains only to your part of the application. Other items like transcript and teacher evaluations can come after the deadline. We understand that most senior year transcripts will not be available until some time in January. Make sure to have your school send the transcript as soon as it is available.
Everistus - Abuja, Nigeria
If one isn't applying for financial aid, will there be any need to submit the financial aid form and how does one indicate that he isn't applying for aid?
ND Admissions
Everistus,
As an international student you are not required to complete the financial aid application process. You are required, however, to complete the International Student Certification of Finances Form to demonstrate that you family has the ability to pay for all four years of your expenses. The form Notre Dame requires is available on our website at: http://www.nd.edu/~finaid/undergraduate/other/international_student_financial_aid.shtml
Kristen - Plymouth, MA
What is the student to teacher ratio? Do the professors have office hours in which the students can meet with them and receive extra help?
ND Admissions
The faculty:student ratio is 1:12 and yes, our professors are most accessible! They require office meetingsduring the semester, not so much to state class standards, as to meet you and get to know you personally in the context of your background, academic goals and interests.
Scott - Kaneohe, HI
Since Notre Dame is always looking to diversify, is there a better chance of being accepted from a state with a less than average number of applicants?
ND Admissions
Geographic location is not a factor in the admissions process. We do not have quotas by state or region.
Everistus - Abuja, Nigeria
I am a Nigerian and my West African Examinations Council (WAEC) certificates are released about a year after the exams, and that will be in september 2009 for me. However my results are online and I printed a copy of it and had my high school verify it is an original. Is this acceptable to Notre Dame?
ND Admissions
Hi Everistus,
If your high school sends us a document and has verified it, then we will accept it. Just make sure we can tell it is an official high school document!
Kristen - Plymouth, MA
Would it be possible to double major in Business Management and Political Science? How would I go about setting that up?
ND Admissions
What you’re considering is actually dual degree; it’s where you would receive a BBA from the College of Business in Management and a BA from the College of Arts and Letters in Political Science. I had a number of my friends take a similar route and it didn’t seem to difficult for them. You would start by talking with your First Year Advisor to plan your coursework to complete the requirements for each major.
Lacey - Corvallis, OR
I am curious about how to submit AP credit for classes to the University of Notre Dame. Thank you!
ND Admissions
You can have your college counselor submit your AP scores on your transcript or on a score report, or you can request that they be sent directly from the College Board. I hope that helps!
Joe Evans - Sherwood, AR
Are there any tips you can give me for the application process? I think my academic record is good enough to get into Notre Dame, but is there any way to make my application more appealing?
ND Admissions
Make sure that your self comes through—I think the worst thing to do is to try to write something you think we want to hear. So then, for lack of better phrasing, be sure to be yourself! Otherwise, give us your best, don’t be afraid to retest if you think yours may be a little low, and hope for the best!
Sammie - West Bend, Wi
Hello,
I submitted my application during the first week of December, but I think that I would like to change my intended major on it. Also, I want to change what I put on my schedule for next semester; originally I was going to drop a class and pick up a different one, but now I want to just finish out my year with that same class. Is it a possibility that I could change this? I tried e-mailing the admissions office, but I got no response.
ND Admissions
Sammie,
You can change your intended major and continue to update your application with any necessary changes. Please email the admissions staff member who covers your home sate with any changes you seek to make to your application. Click here for the admissions staff listing.
Elise - Potomac, MD
How much debt, on average, does a ND student have at graduation?
ND Admissions
Hi Elise,
The average range of need-based debt upon graduation for a Notre Dame student is between $17,000 to $21,000.
Mercedes - Tarija,
I would like to know if I still have a chance of being accepted even if my SAT is not very good.
ND Admissions
Mercedes,
The SAT is an important part of our evaluation of your academic profile. We suggest that you take the SAT again to try and improve your score. Remember that we only evaluate the Critical Reading and Math scores, and we will take the highest of these scores even if they come from different tests.
Rangan - Troy, MI
How important is grade trend in evaluating applicants? My GPA is on the lower side (3.61) but it is mainly due to a bad freshman year. WIll this be taken into consideration? Also, my school does not rank its students. How will that factor into my admissions chances?
Thanks.
ND Admissions
We evaluate a student’s performance closely within the context of their high school, and we apprectiate an upward trend in grades.
Leah - Boston, MA
Is it socially difficult to be a liberal student on campus?
ND Admissions
Please see above.
Caitlin - Overland park, KS
I've been informed that Notre Dame doesn't offer very many scholarships. What scholarships are available and what are other ways to help pay tuition?
ND Admissions
Dear Caitlin,
Last year Notre Dame offered over $74 million in University Scholarship assistance to our undergraduate students who demonstrated financial need (this does not include athletic aid, ROTC, etc.). The University has a significant committment to assisting qualified students who have financial need to attend the University. I would suggest you visit our website at financialaid.nd.edu to learn more about our financial aid programs and our application procedures.

How many students live on campus for all four years? What is the dorm life like?
ND Admissions
80% + of our undergraduates live on campus at anytime. They reside in male or female residence halls. Spirited, loyal and service-oriented, these halls are “homes-away-from-homes for our students, most of whom travel 500 miles + to live and study here. You are assigned your hall and roommate(s) for your first year, and then, make your own choices for subsequent years, though most students choose to remain in their original halls as they have made friends and love the halls’ traditions! Many remain with their original roommates, too!

I am curious about how to submit AP credit for classes to the University of Notre Dame. Thank you!
ND Admissions
You can have your college counselor submit your AP scores on your transcript or on a score report, or you can request that they be sent directly from the College Board. I hope that helps!

Hello, I submitted my application during the first week of December, but I think that I would like to change my intended major on it.

Mercedes - Tarija,
I would like to know if I still have a chance of being accepted even if my SAT is not very good.
ND Admissions
Mercedes, The SAT is an important part of our evaluation of your academic profile. We suggest that you take the SAT again to try and improve your score. Remember that we only evaluate the Critical Reading and Math scores, and we will take the highest of these scores even if they come from different tests.
