Hi, because of the current economy has there been a drop in the number of applicants so far?
ND Admissions
You know, we’re still waiting to see what effect the economy will have on our applicant pool, and it’s too early to tell if there will be a drop because of it. Sorry that I don’t have more of an update!
Serah Han - Kobe,
If my school form materials are missing, will you notify me or do I have to call and see if everything is there?
ND Admissions
Serah Han,
We will mail you a notice after the new year letting you know whether or not your application is complete and, if not, what materials we are still missing. If you are an international student, we will email you a notice.
Grayson - , CA
What percent of your student body is from the West Coast, and how well do they adjust to the fall/winter weather extremes?
ND Admissions
Hi Grayson,
Thanks for your interest in the University of Notre Dame! At this point in time about 12-15% of our student body are from the West Coast. Generally, these students adjust just fine to the fall/winter after purchasing winter clothing and learning how to layer!
Roger - San Pedro Sula, Honduras
ND Admissions,
I am currently finishing my supplemental essay. If I mention Pablo Nava (ND student who developed a project for the poor people of Mexico) in my essay, will the Admissions Committee know what I am talking about?
Will the late submission of my application (Tomorrow) influence my chances for admission?
Thanks for your time to answer these questions.
-Roger Larach
ND Admissions
I would think that most of the staff would be familiar with Pablo Nava, but you may want to put an introductory sentence to explain who he is to be safe. Also, your application isn’t late! Our deadline isn’t until December 31 at midnight.
Kristen - Plymouth, MA
What is the faith community like on campus?
ND Admissions
Kristen,
One of the most unique characteristics of Notre Dame is the added aspect of spirituality. We were founded as a Catholic university and we are still proud of that identity. Students do have many opportunities to grow in their faith lives, but each student has a different experience while here. The faith community is very supportive and there are great resources for students and faculty to learn and grow in faith.
I suggest that you watch some videos and explore our website to find out more about spirituality and faith on campus.
Augie - Memphis, Tn
if you could summarize the Notre Dame experience in a sentence, what would you say?
ND Admissions
Hi Angie –
While not the only campus to provide a great undergraduate experience, few schools can compare in providing the ultimate integration of academic, spiritual/service and social experiences and the significant opportunities for growth in all three realms during four years of active community life.
Renae - Hartford, CT
I am really interesting in applying to Notre Dame. But the only thing that is keeping me from doing so is one thing. I know the campus is predominantly white, so how are the race relations on campus?
ND Admissions
There is hardly a correlation between race relations and the ethnic diversity on campus. There are many ethnic clubs on campus and I would say the vast majority of our students possess a broad range of interests. I found the race relations here to be better than I expected. In my high school, cliques primarily stayed to themselves, but at Notre Dame I found that students from across campus regardless of their ethnicity were involved in a number of the different ethnic clubs. Additionally, I would say it was always exciting to see people from various backgrounds at club events and I never felt socially awkward venturing out to experience new things and interact with different groups.
Michael - New York, NY
Hi, I'm from New York City, and have lived here all of my life. How is the transition a big city to Notre Dame?
ND Admissions
Good evening. Unlike most other universities, 80% of our students live on campus all 4 years and 50% of our Seniors live on campus. Thus, most of the academic and social life takes place on campus. Also, we are building a college town just south of campus. Now if you do get to miss the big city, Chicago is only 90 miles away and easily accessible by either train or car.
Roger - San Pedro Sula, Honduras
Excuse me, was my previous question received?
-Roger
ND Admissions
Yes, sir! If we did not directly answer your question, it’s probably because we answered a very similar question asked by someone else. Make sure you keep an eye on the answers to this chat!
Sylvia - Surprise, AZ
I am really interested in attending Notre Dame but I am still a little hesitant about whether I meet the requirements or not. I have above average SAT scores (1650), a 4.3 GPA, and I am an International Baccalaureate student. I was also a QuestBridge non-finalist, so I am getting my application forwarded to Notre Dame. Will my application be considered just as a regular application?
ND Admissions
Syliva,
The first part of your question has been answered elsewhere during this chat. Our QuestBridge guru, Mr. Martinez, says that your QuestBridge application will, in fact, be considered just like other regular applicants to Notre Dame.
Zachary - Marlton, NJ
What kinds of creative writing opportunities are available at Notre Dame?
ND Admissions
There are a number of opportunities to do creative writing at ND. Our English department offers courses and a concentration in the area, and you can also attend readings or workshops to develop your work.
Anita - Parlier, CA
What is the admittance rate?
ND Admissions
Hi Anita,
The acceptance rate varies by year, but usually between 20-25% of our applicants are admitted. In the end, we want 2,000 students in each freshmen class.
Jon - Houston, Tx
I'm a senior in high school with an older sister who is currently attending Miami of Ohio. Will Notre Dame meet the financial need of my parents, even though one of them earns over 120,000 a year?
ND Admissions
Hi Jon,
When determining financial need, our office uses the information you provide on the FAFSA and CSS/Financial Aid PROFILE. We consider a wide variety of factors related to a family’s financial strength, including but not limited to income and number of children enrolled in college. Our office will meet the full demonstrated financial need of a student as determined by the FAFSA and CSS/Financial Aid PROFILE.
If a family’s financial situation remains relatively the same during a student’s enrollment, a student’s financial aid package will remain relatively the same. However, if a family experiences changes in their financial situation, such as a sibling graduating from college, then a student may see changes in their financial aid package.
Kristen - Plymouth, MA
What is the campus community like?
ND Admissions
Kristen,
The campus community is full of energy with a strong committment to community. We have 28 residence halls, 15 for men and 13 for women (with our 14th women’s hall being built as we speak). Through the residence halls our students get involved in everything from academic projects to athletic competition. For example, the University sponsors full contact, full pad football for the men in the Fall. Women play flag football. Championship games are played in Notre Dame stadium.
Through the residence hall system we have, the traditions of the University are passed on to each generation of students that come through our doors.
John - Great Falls, VA
I love to sing in my school's chamber choir. How are the choirs at Notre Dame? Are there any scholarships for singing?
ND Admissions
There are a ton of choirs here! They range from small ensemble groups to large groups. Each form has it’s own choir, and there are a cappella groups, men’s choirs, a folk choir…and the list goes on.
I’m not aware of any particular scholarships for singing, but you may be able to find an “outside” scholarship that would apply.
Alysha - Beebe, AR
You have said that Notre Dame considers the Critical Reading and Math scores of the SAT; do they take a similar approach to the ACT?
ND Admissions
We consider all four “traditional” sections of the ACT. As long as the ACT considers their writing section optional, we will, too.
Rangan - Troy, MI
What is it like being a non-Catholic, non-Christian at Notre Dame? How accepting of other faiths are students? And approximately how many ND applicants and students are non-Christian?
ND Admissions
Hi Rangan,
While Notre Dame is a Catholic university, students of all faiths and backgrounds are welcome on campus. I am not Catholic and have been at Notre Dame for seven years—four as a student and now three as an administrator-and not once during that time have I felt uncomfortable or out of place.
The goal of Notre Dame is to help students grow academically and personally while they are here. We want our graduates to be better people—people who can go out into the world, make a difference and truly improve the lives of others (sorry if I sound a bit like Miss America there!). I don’t think you have to be Catholic to agree with a lot of the general morals and ethics of Catholicism, and as long as you are willing to listen to people and grow as an individual, you’ll be fine at Notre Dame.
Each year, about 85% of our students are Catholic (about 85% of our applicant pool happens to be Catholic).
Lukas - Lake Orion, MI
Hello!
As a high school senior, one of the extracurricular activites that I have enjoyed most is Model United Nations. Does Notre Dame have a college level MUN program or club?
Also, another question, if my school does not rank or weight grades, how does that impact my application process? Thanks alot!
ND Admissions
Hi Lukas,
Thanks for joining us tonight. Believe it or not, we had a Model United Nation Organization Organization here on campus! The purpose of this organization shall be to promote awareness of the wide variety of cultures throughout the world and how these cultures interact in the United Nations. Another purpose of this organization will be to attend a Model United Nations conference at least once a year. If you would like more information about this club, please e-mail ndmun@nd.edu. As far as your question regarding rank in class and unweighted grades is concerned, if your school does not provide us with a rank or chooses not to weight grades, that is just fine. It will not impact you negatively in the process, we will simply evaluate your transcript with those things in mind.
Kate - ,
For in-country students, are you need-blind?
ND Admissions
Dear Kate,
Notre Dame is need-blind in the admissions process for domestic students.
Barbara - West Chester, OH
How difficult is it to gain admission into Notre Dame?
ND Admissions
Barbara,
We are fortunate to have a very talented applicant pool apply to Notre Dame each year. Because of that, ND is considered a highly selective school for admission. Last year, less than 27% of applicants were admitted.
Scott - Kaneohe, HI
I'm interested in a major in broadcast journalism, what would that fall under on the common app?
ND Admissions
Our American Studies department is home to many students who want to student journalism, as it offers an interdisciplinary minor in the field. However, if your interest is heavy in broadcast, you may also want to consider our Film, Television and Theater Department, with a concentration in television.
Roshni - El Paso, TX
Good evening! I am applying regular decision How strong is your pre-med program? I want to do ophthalmology with missions, and I want to major in math while also taking religious studies/theology courses; will the curriculum accomodate such diversity?
Thank you!
ND Admissions
We have a program called Arts and Letters Pre Professional, where students take courses that they need for the MCAT and for entrance into medical school, and then have a primary major in arts and letters—so you could study theology and pre-med. 75% of our students who apply to medical school are accepted into at least one school.
Sue - Fishkill, NY
What type of financial aid forms must be filled out? I am a single parent. Does his father fill out forms as well? What if he won't?
ND Admissions
Dear Sue,
Notre Dame requires the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) and the CSS/PROFILE application. The priorty deadline for financial aid is February 15, 2009. As the custodial parent you will complete these applications. Notre Dame asks that the non-custodial parent complete the NonCustodial Parent Statement (which will be available on our website in January). If a non-custodial parent refuses to complete this form we suggest you call or email our office for further guidance.
LIMBIKANI - BLANTYRE,
WHAT MAKES THE UNIVERSITY OF NOTRE DAME UNIQUE FROM OTHERS?
ND Admissions
Limbikani,
Three things make the University of Notre Dame unique from other universities:
(1) The First Year of Studies, which helps our freshmen make the transition from high school to the academic expectations of University. Freshmen do not declare a major until the end of the first year at the earliest. This way, students can determine through their experience of the classes and major prerequisites whether or not an intended field of study is an appropriate match.
(2) Residential Life. Over 80% of our students live in the residence halls, and most live in the same residence hall all four years. The residence hall system allows our students to establish a “home base” from which they get involved in the many academic, social, and athletic activities of the campus.
(3) Faith-based Community. We are a Catholic University. As such, we strongly believe that a person needs to mature not only academically, but also spiritually, in order to be more fully human. You can talk about God or faith with your peers or in class without being mocked. And opportunities, like retreats and liturgies, abound throughout campus every day.
Our students seem to value these characteristics of Notre Dame. 98% of our Freshmen return for their Sophomore year; and 96% of our students graduate on time in four years.
Conor - Hampton, NH
I have applied for the Army ROTC scholarship - What sort of role does the ROTC program play on campus?
ND Admissions
Good evening. The University of Notre Dame has a very long tradition with having one of the best ROTC programs in the nation. Every year two/three campus wide events are held for ROTC cadets and the general Notre Dame community.
Kendall - Timonium, MD
Should we have a copy of AP scores sent for admission purposes or is it good enough to state your scores in that section of the CommonApp.?
ND Admissions
You should have a copy of your scores sent to ND—stating your scores on the Common App is helpful but they will not be considered official until we have a score report. Thanks for your interest in ND!
joseph - el monte, ca
is there an email address i may have to contact an admissions officer in case i have any further questions when finishing my application?
ND Admissions
Absolutely. You can see a list of our staff here, in order to contact the appropriate regional counselor: http://admissions.nd.edu/admissions-staff.
Janet - HZ,
Can I study both mathematics and art history in ND? And when should I make that choice?
ND Admissions
It is possible to double major. You should choose one of these on your application, and then work with your first year advisor over the summer before freshman year.
Annelies - Dilbeek,
I go to a Flemish school and we do not have standardized tests like SAT's, is it necessary that I take these tests before applying or can I do them during one of my holiday periods after sending in my application?
ND Admissions
Good evening. We do require that all students take either the SAT or ACT as part of the application process and will accept both the January and February exams.
Courtney - Stratford, CT
What percent of students receive financial aid?
ND Admissions
Hi Courtney –
This year, freshmen who qualified for need-based aid received an average award of $23,000. Taking into account all students from families below the U.S. median family income, the average award was $35,400. Scholarships from community or national programs, together with loans and campus jobs, reduce costs even further.
Sumeru - Kolkata,
Would a notarised copy of my SAT I scores that I received from the College Board suffice ?
ND Admissions
We need to receive an official copy of the scores. This can be the score printed on an official high school transcript.
Vivian - Spring, TX
I plan on submitting an art supplement, and I was wondering how will the admissions counselors evaluate that? Also, can the art supplement hurt your chances of getting into ND?
ND Admissions
Hello Vivian! Glad to hear you are sending a sample of art talent our way. Actually, we will forward you submission to appropriate faculty for review and assessment – if they admire your talent, it will be “a plus” in your file. If their reaction is less supportive, it will not hurt your chances for admission as we do not require talent supplements, but accept them optionally.
Jiwoo - Maple Ridge,
There is no merit-based scholarship in Notre Dame?
ND Admissions
Dear Jiwoo,
Students and parents inquire about applying for “academic” or “merit” scholarships at Notre
Dame. Financial Aid at Notre Dame is administered and awarded based upon the demonstrated
financial need of the student. All students admitted through the University’s very selective
admissions process are considered worthy of scholarship consideration on the basis of their
outstanding academic and personal credentials. A thorough and consistent review of each
applicant is conducted by the Financial Aid Office each year in order to determine a student’s
financial aid eligibility, including scholarship eligibility.
Mike - Glendale, AZ
When applying to Notre Dame, can you submit a Common Application arts supplement in addition to the Application itself? If Notre Dame does accept arts supplements, are there any guidelines if I plan to make an instrumental recording?
ND Admissions
Mike,
We do not require any art, music, etc supplements, but we will accept them as part of the review process should an applicant choose to submit a supplement. Here are some of the guidelines to use when thinking about submitting a supplement for admission to Notre Dame:
Art and design samples —If you are a prospective art major, or if you have significant artistic talent
and are interested in developing it at Notre Dame, then your application should include samples of your
work. Please send ten to twenty 35mm slides in a transparent slide sheet holder or a CD with electronic
files (jpeg or pdf only) with accompanying 8.5×11 color laser prints of each piece. (Do not send original
work.) The art and design faculty will evaluate the work. Slides will be returned if a self-addressed,
stamped envelope is included. CDs and color prints will only be returned upon request.
Music tapes or CD —If you are a prospective music major, then you should submit a cassette tape or
CD of a solo performance. The music faculty will evaluate the recorded performance, and we will return
the cassette tape or CD to you.
Athletic talent —If you hope to play a varsity sport at Notre Dame, please communicate information
about your talent directly to the appropriate Notre Dame coach, using this address: (Name of sport)
Coach, Joyce Center, Notre Dame, IN 46556-5678.
Architecture Portfolios —If you are a prospective architecture major, a strong portfolio can enhance
your application, but is not required. The preferred format is an 8 1/2” x 11” paper portfolio with two dozen
images that display a variety of subject matter and mediums. The architecture faculty will evaluate the
portfolio, and we will return it to you.
Richard - Fairfax, Va
when do you hear of admission decision for regular decision?
ND Admissions
For Regular Action, you will receive a decision by mail during the first week of April.
Ivy - College Station, TX
I have been dancing for the better part of my life and am loathe to stop, what type of opportunities to perform are available at ND?
ND Admissions
We have dance clubs that range from Irish Dance to Step to Ballet to Swing Dance. Students interested in dance may also participate in the January Charity Welsh Family Dance Show, musicls on campus, or on the dance team.
Kanika - New Delhi,
My application fee, SAT scores, supplement and Common App are being sent online, but my school has sent my transcripts and letters of evaluation through the post. As I am a student applying for financial aid, and my Certificate of Finances has not been sent with my application, I was wondering whether it would be possible to send it with the International Student Financial Aid Application in January, directly to the Office of Financial Aid?
Also, completely unrelated, does it matter much that I am not a Catholic, nor do I practice any religion?
Thank you!
ND Admissions
Good evening. As long as your application is submitted by the 31st of December we will then wait for any supplementary material to arrive before we evaluate it. However, the International Scholarship Committee convenes the first week of March and thus it is important that we receive all of your documents by then to be considered for an international financial aid package. Finally, religion is not taken into account in our evaluation process.
Trevor - Makawao, HI
I expect my first semester grades to be better than my first quarter this year, are the semester grades given more weight?
ND Admissions
Final grades are given the most weight—so yes, your semester grades will be considered with more significance than your midterm grades. Be sure to have your most recent grades forwarded to the Notre Dame Admissions Office, and, as always, stellar grades across the board are always the best bet!
Kate - Westport, CT
I'm interested in becoming a Veterinarian, but am also very passionate about human anatomy and kinesiology. Would you recommend a pre-professional major? Or would it be better to just major in Biology or even Anthropology, as long as I satisfy the requirements to apply to graduate school?
ND Admissions
Kate,
You have plenty of time to explore the various majors that we offer in science. While you need to indicate your intended major on your application, there’s nothing stopping you from picking up a double major, minor, or concentration. This is a good conversation to have with your First Year advisor and/or college advisor when you get here. Some students like to take the pre-professional route, while others like to select a specific science. Regardless of what you choose, you’ll be very well prepared for graduate school.
Jaime - Manila, PH
Can we email the financial aid requirements?
ND Admissions
Hi Jamie –
The University of Notre Dame participates in the College Board’s Institutional Documentation Service (IDOC) which allows students to submit one packet of supporting documentation to IDOC rather than mailing individual documents to each participating institution to which a student has applied for admission. Please see our website for more information: http://www.nd.edu/~finaid/apply/index.shtml

Limbikani, Three things make the University of Notre Dame unique from other universities:
Hi Courtney – This year, freshmen who qualified for need-based aid received an average award of $23,000.
Dear Jiwoo,
Students and parents inquire about applying for “academic” or “merit” scholarships at Notre Dame. Financial Aid at Notre Dame is administered and awarded based upon the demonstrated financial need of the student. All students admitted through the University’s very selective admissions process are considered worthy of scholarship consideration on the basis of their outstanding academic and personal credentials. A thorough and consistent review of each applicant is conducted by the Financial Aid Office each year in order to determine a student’s financial aid eligibility, including scholarship eligibility.
Art and design samples —If you are a prospective art major, or if you have significant artistic talent and are interested in developing it at Notre Dame, then your application should include samples of your work. Please send ten to twenty 35mm slides in a transparent slide sheet holder or a CD with electronic files (jpeg or pdf only) with accompanying 8.5×11 color laser prints of each piece. (Do not send original work.) The art and design faculty will evaluate the work. Slides will be returned if a self-addressed, stamped envelope is included. CDs and color prints will only be returned upon request.
Music tapes or CD —If you are a prospective music major, then you should submit a cassette tape or CD of a solo performance. The music faculty will evaluate the recorded performance, and we will return the cassette tape or CD to you.
Athletic talent —If you hope to play a varsity sport at Notre Dame, please communicate information about your talent directly to the appropriate Notre Dame coach, using this address: (Name of sport) Coach, Joyce Center, Notre Dame, IN 46556-5678.
Architecture Portfolios —If you are a prospective architecture major, a strong portfolio can enhance your application, but is not required. The preferred format is an 8 1/2” x 11” paper portfolio with two dozen images that display a variety of subject matter and mediums. The architecture faculty will evaluate the portfolio, and we will return it to you.
Hi Jamie – The University of Notre Dame participates in the College Board’s Institutional Documentation Service (IDOC) which allows students to submit one packet of supporting documentation to IDOC rather than mailing individual documents to each participating institution to which a student has applied for admission. Please see our website for more information: http://www.nd.edu/~finaid/apply/index.shtml
