Steven - Latham, NY

Do they offer masses in the dorms or only in the church?

ND Admissions

There are over 150 masses a week here both in the dorms and the basilica.

Marie - Scranton, PA

heyy, i was wondering how much time is devoted to being a team manager, and can it be considered a work study position? thanks

ND Admissions

The amount of time necessary to be a good team manager really depends on how well you want to do the job and to which sport you are assigned. I worked as the Head Football Manager and it was similar to a full-time job in addition to going to classes. But, all the benefits and experiences of the position made it completely worth it!

Managers in their senior year, the head managers for sports, receive a partial tuition scholarship here at ND.

Sarah - Homewood, IL

I was asked to apply to the Glynn Family Honors Program - do you know what the chances for admission are?

ND Admissions

Sarah,

If you have been invited to the Glynn Family Honors Program, the chances for admission are very very strong. They are quite selective in their invitations because this is such a small program, and they certainly hope that those invited will be interested in taking advantage of the opportunities associated with the Program.

Ana - Temecula, CA

Though it will be of little use in the snowy season, may I bring my longboard?

ND Admissions

You may certainly bring your longboard, but there are not many places to surf around here.

Lucie - new york, ny

I am "catholic" however i have never made my first communion or confirmation, are there classes if im interested in pursuing these

ND Admissions

Lucie, The Campus Ministry office does offer these classes through the Rite of Christian Initiation of Adults (RCIA). These classes start in the fall and end with First Communion and Confirmation at the Easter Vigil in the spring. Good luck with your discernment!

Tim - Schertz, TX

Does the Notre Dame theater department have open auditions, or are productions limited to only theatre majors?

ND Admissions

Hey Tim,

The Department of Film, Television and Theatre does hold auditions for each production, and they are open to all students. These productions will be produced in the DeBartolo Performing Arts Center, and will be directed by a professor and sponsored by the University. They are not limited to theatre majors, but they are a great way for majors to get involved. There are also a number of student groups on campus which sponsor different shows throughout the year, which are also open to the entire student body for auditions.

John - Mundelein, IL

What is the cheapest way to get from South Bend to Chicago?

ND Admissions

Hi John- There are a couple of methods of transportation. First and cheapest, you can take the train (South Shore Line) from the South Bend Airport to Chicago. I think the tickets are $10. Also, you can take the bus, which runs less frequently and is more expensive. I’m not sure of the cost off the top of my head, but know that there is a discount for a round-trip ticket.

Maria - Mishawaka, IN

What is the Rome study abroad program like? I have wanted to go there for so long and I wanted to know what the experience was like.

ND Admissions

Students in the Rome program will take classes at John Cabot University. They will take at least one Italian language or literature course, and can take 4 other classes in art history, european studies, business, and in other areas of study. Students live in the Trastevere neighborhood in apartment-style flats. They have the opportunity to explore the city of Rome as well as historical sites throughout Italy, through some of the academic programs.

Stacey - Atlanta, GA

What types of social events do the dorms host? Also, could you please talk about Legends, the club on campus?

ND Admissions

Hey Stacey,

The dorms each hold their own dances, usually one formal and one more fun each year. Other than that, dorms sponsor concerts, chariot races, 5k charity races, or a big performance review. As far as Legends goes, it is a bar, restaurant and club. It sponsors concerts and performance events, as well as game watches for sports. There are themed clubs at night (salsa, hip-hop, etc…) so it is a good place to go if you are interested in whatever activity they are sponsoring.

Stacey - Atlanta, GA

What is the weather like in the fall when we arrive? How early does it get cold, and how early does it warm up again?

ND Admissions

Hi Stacey,

The weather is fairly warm (80s) in late August. In fact, you might need to bring or buy a fan if you aren’t in an air-conditioned dorm. Usually it will start to cool down at the end of September and its beautiful during the football season in the fall. The colder weather (typical winter temperatures) comes around November and December.

Nick - Houston, Texas

I would like to learn to play an instrument, are there musical programs for beginners who would like to learn? I can't even read music...yet.

ND Admissions

Defintely. The Department of Music offers classes both for credit and not for credit to teach students how to play several different types of musical instruments. Personally, I took piano lessons as a student here, and, off the top of my head, know that they offer classes in voice, guitar and organ. If you are interested in another instrument, I recommend that you contact the Music Department directly.

John - Mundelein, IL

How easy is it to change majors? And how difficult is it to double major?

ND Admissions

It’s pretty easy to change majors, but it does get more difficult as you near graduation. I would say it’s pretty common to see a person double major which is majoring in two majors within the same college; trying to dual degree is less common because you have two sets of college requirements.

Nick - Houston, Texas

What kind of social scene predominates at Notre Dame? Also I have read that Parietals (sp?) can be bothersome and that single sex dorms and their policies (ie everyone out by 10 or 2) stifles normal male-female relationships. Is this an accurate description?

ND Admissions

Hi Nick- The social scene at Notre Dame is pretty typical of college life. ND is a Catholic college, so those values can be seen in most aspects of student experiences. Let me explain parietals: This is a rule that dictates the acceptable visiting hours for people in dorms of the opposite sex. It states that members of the opposite sex must leave the dorm by 12 midnight on weeknights and by 2am on weekends. This ensures privacy, security, and respect for others in the residential community. Some students find them bothersome, especially when studying late or hanging with friends. There are 24-hour spaces in all of the dorms and many great spots on campus for after-parietals activities. In terms of stifling normal male-female relationships, I think that might be a rare extreme. Students can form and maintain strong relationships despite these residential rules. There’s ample opportunity to form relationships while upholding the Catholic values and residential policies that are a tradition of ND.

Jake - Portland, OR

What's the difference between being admitted regularly vs. being admitted as a "Scholar"?

ND Admissions

Jake,

The office of admissions designates about the top 20% of an already incredibly distinguished admitted class as a “Notre Dame Scholar” based on particularly outstanding academic and personal credentials. This particular designation is an honor at the time of admission, but does not transfer into specific academic or housing benefits as a current. However, students who have financial need can anticipate less loan as part of a financial aid package.

Maria - Mishawaka, IN

How many classes do students end up taking each semester on average? Is getting a double major managable?

ND Admissions

Maria, ND students take five courses per semester on average. Double majors are manageable in most of our programs, especially if the student earns a good amount of AP credit.

Jake - Portland, OR

I myself am Catholic but was still wondering if the religion aspect was "forced" upon you. As well, I was curious if fundamentalism look at religion was common among students.

ND Admissions

Jake, Catholicism, or any religion for that matter is not forced upon students. We are a Catholic school, with a 19 foot tall statue of Mary on our Admin building, a 110 foot tall picture of Jesus on our library, a Crucifix is most classrooms, and a 140 year old Basilica in the middle of campus. At the same time, if you are not looking for a completely religious experience then you do not have to be a part of everything that is going on in that sphere of life. There are plenty of activities that do not fall under the “religious” aspect of campus life. “Fundamentalism” is a word that I feel would describe our student body. There are groups who are orthodox in their thinking about the Church, but they are not groups that students are required to join.

Nick - Houston, Texas

I'm visiting campus tomorrow. What should I do or know to maxmize my visit?

ND Admissions

Hi Nick,

I definitely recommend that you take a tour while you’re here. If you haven’t signed up for any of our formal offerings, there could still be an opportunity to sit in on a class. You would need to check with Annette Edwards in Room 220 of the Main Building early in the day. Hopefully, you’ll be attending the Open House reception in the Main Building at 7:00 Thursday night. You’ll have great opportunities to meet with faculty and administrators at the reception. Enjoy your visit!

Hans - Wisconsin Dells, WI

What is campus life like? Is it more laid back; study, study, study; or a good mix of both?

ND Admissions

Hans,

There is definitely a balance between rigorous studying and a laid-back atmosphere. It will usually depend on your classes and the weeks you have the most work, which will usually be spent studying. Striking a fair balance of the two is pretty easy to do with some advanced planning and communication with classes, so you will have time to chill out and relax.

Quan - Spring, TX

If we gain outside scholarships, would it take away from our financial aid package?

ND Admissions

I recommend that you consult the Financial Aid Conditions and Information that accompanied your Award Letter. It goes into detail about how outside scholarships affect could affect your University scholarship. If you are unable to find this document, go to the following link and read the portion on Receipt of Additional Scholarships/Grants:

http://www.nd.edu/%7Efinaid/pdfs/0809/Undergrad%20FACI%200809_color.pdf

Tom - Houston, TX

About how many students do the 5 year science/MBA program?

ND Admissions

The number varies from year to year, but it’s relatively low (less than 200) because you actually have to apply for it.

Justin - Portland, OR

Hi, First off, thanks for the chat! I just got a letter from my local alumni club and I feel part of the family already. I have two questions: How do I go about getting season football tickets? I plan to have political science be my intended major for my freshman year but I want to get some sort of background in Economics. I understand that neither of these programs are offered as a minor. What do you reccomend? Double major or alternative minors?

ND Admissions

Hi Justin,

One of the first things you will receive in your campus mailbox is your application for football tickets. Don’t worry—you’ll get your tickets! It’s the most important piece of mail all year!

It should be pretty easy to double major between Political Science and Economics, but there is also a minor program known as PPE (Philosophy, Politics and Economics). PPE combines the three subjects and does a great job of linking the different ideas and thoughts between the subjects. If you do not want to take two majors, you may want to look into PPE.

Will - Atlanta, GA

What kind of opportunities are there in urban planning? Also, I've read about the Irish Studies minor/concentration. Is that something that is popular at ND?

ND Admissions

Hi Will,

If you are interested in urban planning, a civil engineering or industrial design major may be the way to go. In those majors, you’ll have more hands-on opportunities to develop skills in urban planning.

The Irish Studies minor is the only program of its kind in the United States. Although it is a smaller program, it is quite popular among students.

claire - la selva beach, CA

Why should I go to ND as opposed to other good Catholic schools, such as BC?

ND Admissions

Hi Claire!

Notre Dame is an AMAZING place to be a young Catholic!!!! Whether you are very active in your faith or still have a lot of exploring to do, ND is a place that facilitates your faith. As a start, every single dorm has its own chapel. Dorms tend to celebrate Sunday mass at 10pm—a time of day that is fitting for college students. Students gather in their chapels, shoulder to shoulder, in pajamas, to celebrate mass each week. Dorm masses are unique to Notre Dame, and one of the best memories that our graduates have. We also have the beautiful Basilica of the Sacred Heart and many other chapels in building across campus. Notre Dame offers over 125 masses in a single week for students! I could write paragraphs and paragraphs about the constantly ongoing retreats, workshops, lectures, clubs and activities, seminars and more which revolve around faith at Notre Dame…but for now, I’ll refer you to the campus ministry website, campusministry.nd.edu. Here you can get a better feel for the depth of our mission as a Catholic University.

I’d guess that no other university in the country announces during a nationally televised college football game the exact times and locations of campuses masses held within a half hour of the end of the game!

Each day at 10PM, the basilica bells toll the alma mater, “Notre Dame, Our Mother” as a tribute to Our Lady who watches over the University from atop the Dome. Day and night, the Grotto at Notre Dame glows with candles lit by our students as they visit to pray and reflect.

Claire, you will probably take your faith to any school you attend, and I encourage you to do so. You’ll certainly receive a fine education at another school like Boston College. Notre Dame has a unique way of encouraging students to truly live that faith every day, in your undergraduate experience and beyond, to educate not just the mind, but the heart. We remain the only premier Catholic University in the United States in the Top 20 each year. We appreciate your interest—Go Irish!

Mairaj - South Bend, IN

How can I find out my financial aid status?

ND Admissions

Mairaj,

If you applied for financial aid and have not received an award letter from us it is likely that your file is incomplete. We have sent students whose files are incomplete a second letter (on April 9). I would suggest that you contact the Financial Aid Office directly regarding the status. See prior postings for contact information.

Janel - McMurray, PA

I am taking AP Chemistry this year and I plan on taking the AP test this May. I am majoring in Chemical Engineering. If I were able to achieve the score needed, would it be advisable to test out of the first semester class?

ND Admissions

Janel, most engineering students who score a 5 on the AP CHEM test will take the credit for CHEM 10171 and it does not seem to creat academic problems for prospective chemical engineers when they take CHEM 10122 in the spring semester.

Dominique - Salinas, CA

Can you explain the differences between the mathematics major in the College of Arts and Letters and College of Science?

ND Admissions

They really differ in their focus. Details can be found here

Bridget - Toronto, ON

Do students go to Chicago often?

ND Admissions

Hi Bridget!

Chicago is fairly close – only about an hour and a half away – and students will go in once in a while; however, more often than not, students will stay on campus or in the South Bend area. Chicago is very appealing, but students are usually afraid of missing something if they leave for the weekend.

I actually grew up in the Chicago area and my parents still live there but I rarely go home because there are so many things going on here!

Sam - Albuquerque, NM

What is the weather like at Notre Dame? Does it rain or snow a lot?

ND Admissions

Hi Sam,

Thanks for joining us tonight! I too am from New Mexico and understand why you are curious about the weather. We see all four seasons here at Notre Dame, with a robust winter season to say the least. Being that Albuquerque has somewhat mild winters, you will probably need to invest in a warm (or warmer) winter coat and a few scarves and mittens, but in all honesty it’s not that bad, you’ll get through it. We don’t really have a rainy season, but it’s not uncommon for us to see rain in late fall and early spring. And of course we see beautiful weather in spring and fall with beautiful flowers and colorful leaves in those respective seasons.

John - Mundelein, IL

I have only been in regular level mathematics in high school. Will this be an issue for me at ND?

ND Admissions

Hi John,

Regardless of your preparation in high school, all of our first year courses are challenging. However, the First Year of Studies provides excellent resources and services to ensure that all students are successful.

Stacey - Atlanta, GA

With no Greek life, is there any nightlife at Notre Dame and what is it like?

ND Admissions

We do not have a Greek system at Notre Dame. Instead, our dorm system takes the place of that and adds so much more. Students enter into a dorm during their freshman year, and typically stay in the same dorm all three or four years that they choose to stay on campus. Dorms host social and service events throughout the year. Students are also going to athletic and music events on a consistent basis.

Who Knows - Birmingham, AL

being that ND is catholic, is everything very strict? Like do they still have performers come to campus ie. rappers, etc or does the religious aspect limit the social life

ND Admissions

Notre Dame is Catholic and as such there are guidelines as to how we are supposed to live. That being said, there are concerts and events that allow students to just be students. You will not find big name rap artists with some of the lyrics that are out there, but you don’t have curfews or bedchecks or other things such as that.

Tracey - , MI

My daughter will be on the cross country team in the fall, does she still have to take PE? might she be able to room with another athlete?

ND Admissions

Tracey, student-athletes need to complete 10 weeks of PE in the Contemporary Topics portion. They receive credit for the other 20 weeks because of their athletic training. The random assignment of students to room makes it unlikely that she will have a student-athlete roommate.

Allison - Ottawa, OH

Do most students loft or bunk their beds to free up space in the dorms?

ND Admissions

Hi Allison- Lofting and bunking beds depends on your dorm arrangement. Some dorms have larger rooms, so this is unnecessary. Some dorms have furniture that is “bunkable,” others do not. Some dorms allow lofting, others do not. My best advice is to check out your dorm’s website when you receive your housing assignment to see if they allow bunking and lofting. Also, wait until you arrive on campus and check out your room. You can make decisions based on your assessment of the room and the preferences of you and your roommate(s).

Nick - Houston, Texas

I was not invited to be a Scholar because my standardized test scores apparently did not meet the criteria. Scores are not everything and I've grown a lot since my Junior Year, is there anyway I can appeal not being name a Scholar?

ND Admissions

Hi Nick,

Unfortunately, you cannot appeal being admitted rather than being admitted as a Notre Dame Scholar. The fact that you were admitted to Notre Dame shows you are very bright and well-rounded; you should be very proud of that honor—there are thousands of worthy students who we were forced to turn down this year.

Anna - Tampa, FL

I love dancing, and especially ballet. I know ND doesnt have a dance major or minor, but do you know of any local studios or any dance organizations on campus?

ND Admissions

Hi Anna -

While Notre Dame does not have a dance major, there are student groups that get together to plan events on campus. I know of a Ballroom Dancing Club, the Dance Company that puts on shows, and Irish Dancing group. I recommend visiting the following site for a listing of all student groups and their websites (if applicable):

http://www.nd.edu/~sao/studentgroups/listing/alphalist.shtml

If you don’t find a group that interests you, all these groups were founded by students like yourself with an interest. You can work with the Student Activities Office to create your own group, which could qualify for funding from the University.

Notre Dame has its Leighton Performing Arts Center and the city of South Bend also has the Morris Performing Arts Center. Both of these venues bring in great musicals, concerts, etc., throughout the year if you are interested in spectating, versus taking an active part.

Gavin - Texarkana, AR

What do i do if i haven't met requirements to enter a specific college at Notre Dame and ND won't accept community college credits?

ND Admissions

Hello Gavin,

You can take the physics course at a community college. You’re not taking it for college credit. You’re taking it to fulfill a high school prerequisite for your desired major. In this situation, a community college course is acceptable.

Reza - Fort Lauderdale, FL

Is there a cognitive science program available? I didn't see one when I looked at mjors and minors.

ND Admissions

We do not have a cognitive science program available. Students interested in this will often major in biological sciences or psychology, concentrating on courses in cognitive psychology.

Patrick - Little Rock, AR

As an ND student, how much time do you spend a day studying, on average? Do you feel like you have enough free time? How is the switch from high school to college?

ND Admissions

Patrick, The time you spend studying will depend on the class load you have and where in the semester we are. Plan on studying at least 2 hours a day on average, but some days you’ll have nothing to do and some days you’ll be studying all day long. Either way, there is still time to have fun and just be a college student. The weekends are usually pretty free, with most people spending Sunday afternoon getting ready for the week. It will be a bit of an adjustment from high school, but as long as you are able to manage your time you will be able to keep on track and stay up with the load.

Laura - Hamburg, NY

When visiting ND i noticed almost everyone had a bike, being that the campus is very large is there a shuttle to take students across campus in the winter

ND Admissions

Hi Laura,

Yes, campus is quite large, but all the buildings are within walking distance from the dorms. Sometimes it is tough to walk around in the snow, but if you dress warmly and wear waterproof boots, you’ll be fine!

nick - Houston, Texas

I come from the 4th largest city in the country, and I was wondering what is there really do to in South Bend? What are the most popular activies both on and off campus

ND Admissions

Nick,

South Bend is definitely not as big as other cities, but there are definite opportunities if you are looking to get off campus and into South Bend. There are plenty of restaurants and movie theaters as well as a major mall, however I would say that those are secondary to Notre Dame’s campus, which has plenty of cultural, artistic, and sporting events to keep students occupied, such as concerts (Ben Folds, Jack’s Mannequin) or guest speakers and lecturers (Keenan Thompson, BJ Novak (“Ryan” from “The Office”)). As far as popular activities, they really range from going to a movie with friends to a hockey or football game or just hanging out. It really depends on everyone’s particular interests, but the opportunities are plentiful both on and off campus.
