Is that band camp for a week before orientation? Where would I stay (not the dorms, I wouldn't guess)
ND Admissions
Students trying out for band are preapproved to stay in the dorms. This usually starts on Wednesday before orientation.
David - Houston, Texas
After our first year of Freshmen studies, how competitive is it to get into the specific departments?
ND Admissions
David, at the end of your first year at ND, you will be able to enter the major of your choice, assuming that you have completed the pre-requisites.
Stephanie - Nashville, TN
Since a greater number of students are admitted to ND than the anticipated class size, is there a possibility that the class will fill up before the deadline on May 1 and your deposit will not guarantee you a spot in the freshmen class?
ND Admissions
Any student who is offered a spot is gauranteed a place in our class as long their confirmation card is postmarked on or before May 1st
Dominique - Salinas, CA
I would like to double major in sociology and mathematics, but the math program I am interested in is only offered at the College of Science. Can I major in two different colleges? Or should I just stay in the College of Arts and Letters for the math major?
ND Admissions
Dominique, you can pursue a degree in the College of Science in math and a second major in sociology. It will be easier if you earn some AP credits prior to arriving at ND.
Maria - Mishawaka, IN
I've heard about the meal plans a little, but what are the options for students?
ND Admissions
Hey Maria,
There are two options for on-campus residents seeking a meal plan. The first is Premium 21, which is pretty straightforward: twenty-one meals in the dining hall each week, which boils down to three meals in the dining hall each day. The food in the dining halls is exceptional, so this is a great way to go if that is what you are looking for. The other option, which is more popular, is called the Flex 14. This offers fourteen meals in the dining hall each week, but provides you with 305 flex points (equivalent to a dollar, essentially), which can be spent at most of the on-campus restaurants if you don’t want the dining hall for a particular meal. These restaurants include Subway, Burger King, Sbarro, or even Starbucks for a cup of coffee. Hope this helps!
Ana - Temecula, CA
Is it a viable option to get an apartment near campus after freshman year?
ND Admissions
Hi Ana-
This is a viable option if you decide to move off campus as a sophomore. Most students stay on campus until at least their junior year, but if you decided to move off campus, you could. ND doesn’t have any apartments or sponsored off-campus housing, so you’d be on your own to find a place. I would also give the ND residential life a fair shot. Campus life is great in the dorm set up we have!
Lauren - Santa Rosa, CA
For someone from California: What was it like getting accustomed to both the cold winters in ND and its distance from home?
ND Admissions
Lauren,
The winters can get cold here but most students are able to cope through bundling up and moving quicker across campus. The cold wheather also provides new opportunities for students to experience snow and ice skating as well as a Notre Dame tradition, snowball fights!! The distance is a little harder to overcome, but Notre Dame quickly becomes a home away from home. Calls home and emails help to overcome homesickness, but also becoming involved with groups and friends here on campus. The more you throw yourself into campus life, the quicker you will adjust to being away from home.
jack - goshen, in
Can I take Chinese Mandarin at ND? Which years? Does it count for foreign language requirements?
ND Admissions
Yes you can! I know students studying it as early as their freshman year and yes it does count towards foreign language requirements.
Tatiana - Rio de Janeiro, RJ
I am interested in being able to horseback ride, rock climb and mountain bike and I read somewhere on the ND website that these opportunities are available to students. What I wanted to know is if any of these activities are competitive, if I can take part in all three, if I can practice one of these whenever I feel like it, and just how these activities work, generally speaking. And, isn't Notre Dame located in a rather flat part of the country? How does on rock climb, or mountain bike?
ND Admissions
Notre Dame is in fact located in a rather flat part of the country. There are some great biking trails close to campus. As far as being able to horseback ride, we have an equestrian team on campus as well as opportunities to volunteer at the local Reins of Life facility, working with students with disabilities and horses.
Kelly - Cranberry Twp., PA
Do you have any suggestions for good professors in the science department?
ND Admissions
Hi Kelly,
Many students consult the upperclassmen in their dorms to learn more about professors they enjoyed.
Sam - Albuquerque, NM
I have heard that the architecture program at Notre Dame is one of the best, but I've also heard that it is just above mediocre. Which is true? And how demanding is architecture school at ND? Will I get any sleep?
ND Admissions
Sam, ND’s architecture program follows a classical approach that is not appreciated by some schools that are wedded to the principles of modern architecture. This accounts for the mixed opinions that you have heard.Overall, ND produces well-trained architects who are prepared for success. Architecture students put in long studio hours, but you will be able to sleep on most nights.
Tatiana - Rio de Janeiro, RJ
What are the rules of having guests in the dorms? Can a friend or family member spend a night in my room if he/she comes to visit?
ND Admissions
Hi Tatiana-
There is an opportunity to house guests of the same sex in your dorm. Rules like parietals prevent guests of the opposite sex from staying in your room. If you have a family member or friend who wants to visit, you will need to register them in advance with your hall staff. It’s always fun to show off campus to visitors!
Stacey - Atlanta, GA
Where are the formals held?
ND Admissions
Stacey,
Generally each dorm will pick a different location based on the size and formality of the dance. Common places include the LaFortune Ballroom, the Oak Room, Jordan Hall, or the South Dining Hall. The Halls of the Year get to have their formals in the Main Building under the dome as one of their prizes. Hope that helps!
Lucie - new york, ny
im undecided on my major im interested in bio medical engineering/premed/ some type of physical therapy are there good opportunites for my desired fields and is there flexibility in switching majors
ND Admissions
Dear Lucie,
There are many opportunities for our students who are interested in these fields down the road. And, many students switch their major once, twice, and even more before finally settling on a major. Still, 96 % of our students graduate on time, and Notre Dame students are admitted to medical school at nearly twice the rate of the national average. Also, Indiana University Medical Center in South Bend is located next to campus, and our students have many opportunities for internships and research opportunities there.
Lucie - new york, ny
are there good internship opportunities for students? are there any local teaching hospitals? i am also considering the university of rochester which has strong memorial hospital right next to campus, why should I go to ND over U of R?
ND Admissions
There are two major hospitals within 2 miles of campus with a multitude of opportunities for student volunteer and intern work. In addition to these, the South Bend branch of Indiana University’s medical school is across the street from campus, and both Notre Dame students and faculty members have special privilegs there throughout the year.
Junli - Guangzhou,
I am currently an undecided student wavering between ND and NYU. How is the economics program in ND like? What do the students do after graduation? Can you describe the advantages of ND over that of NYU? Thank you
ND Admissions
Hi Junli,
The academic program at Notre Dame prepares students for various vocations following graduation. About 55% of students go on to careers, 30% go to graduate school, 10% participate in service, and 5% enter military service. For more information on the economics program, you can consult their website.
The beauty of a Notre Dame education is that it not only provides students with an excellent academic curriculum, but it also educates the whole person. Students are challenged mentally, socially, spiritually, and emotionally throughout their experience.
Airi - Blairstown, NJ
I take art courses in my high school and I paint and draw during free times. Is there an art studio in ND that is accessible for students?
ND Admissions
We have quite a few art studio courses available to students. Some students taking these classes are art majors, and others are non-majors who are simply interesting in continuing their work
Stacey - Atlanta, GA
Does the dreary winter weather ever affect the moods of the students?
ND Admissions
Stacey,
There is no getting around the snow in the winter, but generally it doesn’t affect the attitudes of the students too heavily. Students are pretty excited about the first snowfall for some major quad snowball fights, and winter break does a good job breaking up the time; the dreary weather makes the first beautiful days of spring really feel great when they come. The weather is definitely something to contend with, but I don’t think the mood of the student body is every significantly affected.
Sarah - Homewood, IL
Are there choirs at Notre Dame? If there are, is it difficult to get into them?
ND Admissions
Sarah,
There are many different choirs at Notre Dame. If you are interested in singing at church we have the Folk Choir, the Liturgical Choir, the Women’s Liturgical Choir, and the Schola. Outside of church, we have the Celebration Choir, the Voices of Faith Gospel Choir, Coro Primavera de Nuestra Senora, and many others. Each of these choirs have an audition process and it depends on which choir you wish to join as to the difficulty of getting into that choir.
Ana - Temecula, CA
: ) I guess I meant my skateboard of unusual length.
Are there any specific actions to take to get involved with the marching band before orientation?
ND Admissions
Yes, you may bring your skateboard! As far as the marching band goes, students try out for the band during the week of summer right before freshman orientation.
Senay - Hawthorne, CA
How are the dorms arranged? are there all freshman dorms or are they mixed? and is there any housing form where you state your living habits/personality to pair you up with a rommate?
ND Admissions
Hi Senay-
Dorm life on campus is pretty unique. We have 28 dorms are single-sex, class-mixed. Students are assigned a dorm as a freshman and typically stay in the same dorms for four years or as long as they stay on campus. Your dorm becomes a huge part of your identity on campus, and each dorm has its own events and character, and each becomes a great community. You get to meet people from all different majors and classes, which makes for great networking and a supportive home. There is no housing form for roommate pairings. You will be assigned a random roommate as a freshman, and you will be able to choose your roommate(s) in future years.
Lauren - Santa Rosa, CA
I turned in my financial aid packet a bit late, is there any way of knowing when I'll receive it? Is there a deadline for this?
ND Admissions
Hi Lauren -
We are working as quickly as we can to complete the Freshman financial aid awards and mail them out to students. If you are unsure whether we have received it, I recommend that you contact our office. We can give you an update on your application’s status.
Mark - South Bend, IN
Can you tell me why I should go to Notre Dame as oppposed to Loyola University Chicago or Georgetown?
ND Admissions
I think that it is a matter of personal fit. All three schools have distinct personalities. Hopefully, you’ll have an opportunity to visit them, so that you can see which you like best.
Stacey - Atlanta, GA
Please tell me about the equestrian team at Notre Dame.
ND Admissions
The equestrian team is a club sport at Notre Dame. The team rides at a barn located 25 miles from campus. Students join the team at the beginning of the fall semester. Anyone is welcome to join, regardless of riding experience. We have some team members who have never ridden before, and others who have been showing for years. They take lessons once a week (usually in a group of 3 or 4 riders), riding hunt. It is not necessary (but is possible) to bring your own horse to Notre Dame. Students on the team will ride in 4 or 5 shows each semester. The team is made up of 20-25 student attending either Notre Dame or St. Mary’s
jack - goshen, in
Can you give the percentage of the Notre Dame student body by ethnic groups?
ND Admissions
Notre Dame is about 11% Hispanic, 8% Asian-American, 4% African American and less than 1% Native American. The University community is dedicated to making sure people of all backgrounds, religions, geographic areas, etc. are comfortable, accepted and successful as members of the Notre Dame Family.
Mark - Carmel, IN
I heard that there is an all school weight lifting competition in the spring. Is this true, and how does it work if its true?
ND Admissions
I’ve never heard of one…
Khalid - South Haven, MI
I'm a normal practicer of Islam, and I want to be able to interact with other Muslims...... How many other Muslims go to ND and how strong is its religious community
ND Admissions
Khalid,
Islam is a minority faith here at Notre Dame. The number of Muslims varies each year, but is generally less than 1% of the student population. Because the community is so small they are a very tight-knit group and hold services on campus throughout the year as well as getting involved with the Muslim community in northern Indiana. There are also plenty of opportunities for interreligious activities to explore where different faiths come together in their beliefs.
David - Westerville, OH
Notre Dame is asking me to pay a lot more than the FAFSA said I would be expected to pay. Is this common? Also, am I right to assume that the recipients of the Joyce scholarship have already been notified?
ND Admissions
Hi David -
I would not say it’s common, but the FAFSA and the CSS/PROFILE use different methodologies in coming up with the amount a family can pay.
Concerning the Joyce Scholarship, you are correct. The Joyce Scholarship recipients have already been selected.
If you have further questions about this, I recommend that you contact our office.
Debbie - Oak Park, CA
At the end of the school year, do students ship everything home or are there places to store items such as bedding and winter clothes, etc?
ND Admissions
Your dorm will offer storage and a number of students will pool together and get their own storage unit.
Debbie - Oak Park, CA
We are visiting ND tomorrow and Friday and hope to arrive in time to attend the Open House tomorrow evening. What do you suggest we wear to the Open House - we will be traveling all day.
ND Admissions
The Open House isn’t formal, so you should dress comfortably.
Stacey - Atlanta, GA
Do people dress up for football games? Do girls dress up for social events, and what kinds of social events are there?
ND Admissions
Hi Stacey,
People definitely dress up for football games, but in their Notre Dame gear! The entire student body and most Notre Dame fans actually wear what has come to be known as “The Shirt” for football games which is a t-shirt that a member of the student body has designed for that season. “The Shirt” is worn so as to express unity and is just another way to support the Fighting Irish. The proceeds from the t-shirt sales are used to support a variety of worthy causes. As far as social events are concerned, there are many occasions that girls and guys get dressed up for, with dances being the most popular dress up events hosted on campus.
Quan - Spring, TX
Apparently, obtaining outside scholarships is not much of a use because it takes away from your financial aid package. If I cannot afford to go to Notre Dame because the cost is still great, do you suggest taking a big private loan?
ND Admissions
Quan,
Outside scholarships, by federal regulation, must be considered a resource when determining financial need. Notre Dame meets the demonstrated financial need of aid applicants and therefore we are required to reduce something in the aid package to accommodate the inclusion of the outside scholarship. Our policy is to reduce self-help (work or loan). This is a general description as each financial aid package is different and we would want to respond specifically to your particular situation.
It sounds as though you have some real concerns and questions about your financial aid eligibility and how you can identify appropriate financing options. I invite you to call our office tomorrow and ask to speak to a counselor. Our office phone number is 574-631-6436.
Kelly - Cranberry Twp., PA
I'm looking to major in Biology, but I still really want to continue learning Spanish. Is it possible to major in bio with a minor in Spanish? Or could i possibly just have a major in bio with a concentration in Spanish?
ND Admissions
Hi Kelly,
Many students choose to double major! You can major in both Biology and Spanish, although because of the requirements necessary for both, they major in Biology and minor in Spanish. Another possible route is the Arts and Letters Pre-Professional major, where you would take all of the requirements for medical school, while majoring in something in the College of Arts and Letters.
Alex - Houston, Tx
If I chose bimolecular engineering, is it possible to get premed qualification?
ND Admissions
Yes. You may have to pick up an extra class one or two semesters, but it isn’t too hard to be biomolecular engineering and satisfy the premed requirements.
Julie - Downey, CA
What percentage of admitted students actually end up attending Notre Dame?
ND Admissions
Approximately, 56-57% of admitted student will accept our offer of admission. Notre Dame is one of a dozen or so colleges that admits fewer than 50% of its applicants and confirms more than 50%.
Lauren - Santa Rosa, CA
How easy/hard is it to get research opportunities, considering competition etc.?
ND Admissions
Lauren, ND has launched a major initiative to increase undergraduate involvement in research activities, so you should have some good opportunities once you have established yourself in your chosen academic program.
Stacey - Atlanta, GA
Why should I choose Notre Dame over a school such as UVA? What are the advantages of going to a private school?
ND Admissions
If you’re just looking for the differences between public and private, see the response regarding UNC-Chapel Hill. If you’re looking for specifics regarding UVA, please contact the Admissions Office of either ND or UVA.
Sarah - Homewood, IL
What kinds of extracurricular activities does Notre Dame offer? Is it difficult to get involved?
ND Admissions
We have over 300 clubs to get involved with on campus! Depended on where your interests are, you can get involved with traditional intramural athletics through the dorms. Or, you may choose to join the sailing or the equestrian team! You can do service in the South Bend community with children or with the elderly. We offer different academic clubs and religious or faith based groups. Some students get involved with our student government, others will participate in the musical opportunities offered throughout campus!
Tatiana - Rio de Janeiro, RJ
On holidays can students stay in the dorms if they don't have anywhere else to go? I live abroad, so I can't go "back home" too frequently.
ND Admissions
Hi Tatiana,
The dorms close during Christmas break and over the summer, but they will be open for the full length of each semester. If you don’t want to go home, it’s always easy to take trips with friends, do service work, or go home with someone you know.
Erin - Grand Rapids, MI
I am still deciding between Notre Dame and one other school and as much as I'd love to go to ND in the fall I have to be honest, I'm a little worried about how difficult it is going to be. I'm aware how difficult it is to be accepted in the first place so maintaining good grades in my classes worries me a bit. I was wondering how difficult you'd say the classes are? And if you're having trouble are professors willing to help you out?
ND Admissions
Hi Erin-
I understand the hesitation. Classes here can be challenging, but that is a normal part of college studies. You can take classes that fit your level in any particular topic. Professors are always willing to help as much as needed and there are many other resources for extra help. Nobody will let you down if you’re looking for help.
Remember too that college is an opportunity to be challenged. I’ve often felt challenged by classes, sought help, worked extra hard, and enjoyed a sense of accomplishment when I did well.

At the end of the school year, do students ship everything home or are there places to store items such as bedding and winter clothes, etc?
ND Admissions
Your dorm will offer storage and a number of students will pool together and get their own storage unit.

Apparently, obtaining outside scholarships is not much of a use because it takes away from your financial aid package. If I cannot afford to go to Notre Dame because the cost is still great, do you suggest taking a big private loan?
ND Admissions
Quan, Outside scholarships, by federal regulation, must be considered a resource when determining financial need.

If I chose bimolecular engineering, is it possible to get premed qualification?
ND Admissions
Yes. You may have to pick up an extra class one or two semesters, but it isn’t too hard to be biomolecular engineering and satisfy the premed requirements.
Julie - Downey, CA

Hi Erin- I understand the hesitation.
