Erin - Villa Hills, KY
On my application, I put engineering as my intended major, but I'm also interested in biology. I was wondering if there is an open house for the College of Science?
ND Admissions
The College of Science is hosting an open house the same weekend and the engineering one; you won’t be held to your major, so you may want to stop by the science facilities while you’re next on campus. You’ll also have plenty of time to discern your chosen field of study once you’re here and part of the First Year of Studies. More information on the College of Science can be found here, http://www.science.nd.edu/index.htm.
Alicia - Carmel, IN
We've seen several references to different scholarships and "honors" programs? How do we get information about these specific programs and others such as Notre Dame Scholars, Glynn Scholars, the "QuestBridge Scholarship for QB Match Students" and Reilly Scholars? Do any of these have financial assistance attached to them?
ND Admissions
Dear Alicia,
All financial assistance at Notre Dame is based upon demonstrated financial need. There are a number of previous responses on this chat regarding this issue.
Students are selected as Notre Dame Scholars and Reilly Scholars in the admission process. Glynn Scholars are selected by our faculty. QuestBridge is actually an outside program which Notre Dame participates in. More information about QuestBridge is available at questbridge.org.
Michael - Covington, GA
I don't think that ND offers "Computational Media" - a sort of marriage of the liberal arts and technology. Is there a way to create a major in a field like this?
ND Admissions
Michael, we can put together a variety of programs including “Computational Media”. We have a Center for Creative Computing. One of our recent graduates did the graphics for King Kong and the Matrix. He was the head guy for these.
Michael - Covington, GA
I had heard on campus that being a "Notre Dame Scholar" gave you preferential treatment when it came to grants/scholarships, rather than loans. I have also heard the contrary, that it has no effect whatsoever. Which is it!?!
ND Admissions
Hi Michael -
For students with financial need, the designation of being a Notre Dame Scholar will result in less loans in their financial aid award.
Caroline - Battle Creek, MI
I'm involved with the Campus Ministry department at my high school, and love it. Is there any opportunity for this type of involvement at ND?
ND Admissions
You bet. In fact, you’ll find that campus ministry basically has its own building on campus. You’ll be able to participate in retreats, sing on choirs sponsored by campus ministry that sing in the basilica and at special events, and you’ll even be able to join special faith-sharing groups (both Catholic and interdenominational) that can help you deepen your relationship with God. I’m sure there’s stuff that I’m forgetting, so if you want to, they have a website: campusministry.nd.edu.
Casey - Villa Park, IL
Is there a study abroad program in Spain? If so, could I participate in it if I plan to minor in Spanish?
ND Admissions
We do have a study abroad program in Spain! It is in Toledo and you could apply to participate in the program even if you don’t plan to minor in Spanish! But a Spanish minor wouldn’t hurt as all the courses are taught in Spanish. Feel free to visit: http://www.nd.edu/~ois/Locations/Toledo_Spain/Toledo.html.
Sarah - Chesapeake, VA
About marching band- when you come early on Wednesday, can you move into the dorms?
ND Admissions
Yes, any student arriving early for an official reason will be allowed to move into their dormitories on Wednesday after 5:00 pm.
Michael - Covington, GA
I'm a resident of GA, but my high school is based in VA (I'm homeschooled). Will I receive consisderation for an alumni club scholarship from the ATL club or the DC club?
ND Admissions
Since you are homeschooled, you should fall under the jurisdiction of the Atlanta club for scholarship consideration. It would not hurt for you to be proactive and contact the club to ensure that they have you on their list.
Good luck!
Paolo - Bangkok, Thailand
As far as First-Year classes are concerned, do you recommend any classes to take?
ND Admissions
Paolo, we’ll send you information in early summer about the First Year schedule. Typically you’ll be taking a math course, a science course, a composition course, a university requirement of your choosing, and an elective.
Hannah - Cortez, CO
How much of the financial aid package is usually made up of loans?
ND Admissions
Hi again -
The maximum loan that the University would award to need your family’s financial need would be $7500. The average federal student loan for freshmen was $4300.
Michael - Covington, GA
If I am a non-music major, can I still use the practice facilities? What about the top of the line facilities, like DeBartolo PA Center? For example, could I practice in the organ hall there?
ND Admissions
Hi Michael,
Our basic facilities will be open for you to use. You can also take some classes as a non-major! For something like the organ hall, arrangements can be made for you to play there!
Eric - Lake Forest, IL
How do you go about becoming a manager or trainer for the football team and what's the time commitment?
ND Admissions
Hi Eric,
Here’s a link to the Student Managers’ webpage: http://www.nd.edu/~managers/info.html. As a former manager myself, I can tell you that it’s a huge time commitment, especially during your junior and senior years, but it’s definitely worth it!
Christy - Gilbertsville, PA
Is the probability of getting accepted into Notre Dame's law school higher or lower if I go to ND undergrad?
ND Admissions
Hi Christy,
The chances of being admitted to ND’s Law School are about the same if Notre Dame is your undergraduate alma mater. And it looks like 93 different undergraduate colleges were represented in last year’s admitted law school class.
Sarah - Chesapeake, VA
Are masses typically held on Sunday in the dorms? Does everybody go to mass?
ND Admissions
Yep, masses are typically held Sunday nights in the dorms. I would not go so far as to say that everyone goes to mass, but I think it would be fair to say that most of the dorm does go, even our friends from other Christian traditions.
Hannah - Cortez, CO
In my admissions letter it was stated that since I was designated as a Notre Dame Scholar I will receive preferential aid consideration. What exactly does this mean?
ND Admissions
Congratulations, Hannah,on receiving the designation of a Notre Dame Scholar!
As a result, if your family demonstrates financial need, we will meet that need with fewer loans and more gift.

Hi Danika,
It’s about a 3.5 hour drive from Mt.Pleasant to Notre Dame.
Jeff - Mokena, IL
Are there any Notre Dame alumni clubs in Will County (IL) that offer scholarships?
ND Admissions
Jeff, you will have to email the admissions counselor responsible for your territory to get this specific information. You should contact John Corker jcorker@nd.edu
John - Charlottesville, VA
Are there accelerated programs for students who have taken many AP classes and did well on the AP tests? Also in regards to medicine, are there any other programs offered by Notre Dame besides pre-med?
ND Admissions
John, your advisor will work this summer to make sure you’re in the correct courses given your AP credit. Your AP credit may be used in some cases but not always. (See previous postings.) There are several ways to go to medical school (SCPP, ALP2, Chemistry, Biochemistry, Biology, Math, Engineering). We’ll try to find the best route for you to go to medical school.
Tom - Worcester, MA
If we receive outside scholarships will they be subtracted from our financial aid package numbers or can we use them to pay for the remaining amount?
ND Admissions
Tom,
This is a good question and one that is asked frequently. There is a specific example and detailed explanation of this question on our website at: http://www.nd.edu/~finaid/pdfs/0708/FAQ%200708.pdf
Many Notre Dame students receive scholarships/grants from private organizations. The receipt of any
scholarship, grant, or loan not listed on the original Award Letter must be reported to the Office of
Financial Aid as soon as the student is notified of the award. The receipt of funds not listed on the Award Letter may result in an adjustment to the financial aid award.
As a guide, if a student receives aid beyond that which is listed on the Award Letter, the financial aid
award may be adjusted by reducing:
• Federal Perkins Loan (if applicable)
• Federal Work-Study
• Federal Subsidized Stafford Loan
• University Scholarship
Christy - Gilbertsville, PA
I have a friend who got deferred after applying EA. How likely is it that she would be accepted?
ND Admissions
Hi Christy,
There really is no way for us to tell you of her chances of being admitted. We try to admit as many as many students as possible, and she’ll receive a fair review, but I don’t know her chances of being admitted right now.
Jillian - Buffalo, NY
I am interested in the pre-med program which I've heard is pretty intense, but would there still be opportunity for me to study abroad?
ND Admissions
Of course! Many pre-med students will student abroad. It’s helpful to know early on that you’d like to do both, and your advisors will help you fit everything in; often pre-professional students are able to take classes in their major while abroad. For more details, see http://www.nd.edu/~ois/.
Eleanor - Staunton, VA
Knowing that Notre Dame is a very spiritual school, is there a portion of the population that is agnostic or atheist? How much of a role does faith play in student life at Notre Dame?
ND Admissions
There is definitely a portion of the population who identify themselves as agnostics and atheists, in fact, one of my best friends is the latter. I think you’ll find that faith at ND plays a bigger part in the dorm life than life outside out of the dorm (I say this because most of the dorm goes to mass on Sunday nights), but my friend definitely doesn’t feel ostracized from campus life because he doesn’t share the University’s Catholic identity.
Hannah - Cortez, CO
When I leave to go to Notre Dame I will most likely not be going back home and will need to take my car. How can I get this approved?
ND Admissions
Unfortunately, first year students are not permitted to have cars on campus during their first semester. If you maintain good academic standing during your first semester, then you may bring a car after that.
amy - strafford, pa
I have already comitted to ND and am thinking of taking a summer course here at Villanova university. How would I find out if the credit would be accepted by ND?
ND Admissions
Welcome to the ND family Amy! It’s hard to say whether you’d receive credit for a summer course as all transfer credits are evaluated on a case by case basis. Prior to registering for the course, give the First Year of Studies a call and ask them whether the credits from the course you are planning on taking will be accepted.
Julia - Rye, NY
I hear that there is lots to do on campus to keep students busy. But are there also things to do off campus? What's South Bend like?
ND Admissions
I’ve always been pretty impressed with how much there is to do in South Bend; you just have to do a little digging. There is always the typical (movies, the mall, restaurants, theatre, bowling, rollerskating, go-karting), but for the more adventurous, there are things like cross country skiing, horseback riding, ice skating, making your own chocolate, and much more!
Kevin - East Northport, NY
What type of work-study jobs are available? Does the pay go directly towards tuition? Also, what other types of jobs can you get close to campus, and do a lot of people work?
ND Admissions
Kevin,
There are many opportunities for employment on campus. Even if you go through work-study, you will receive a regular paycheck (or direct deposit). Most students will work on campus because of the convenience though I have heard of a couple working at the nearby mall. On campus, people tour guide, work at Reckers (the restaurant), the dining halls, mail services, phone center, etc. There are many different things you can do! I know a lot of students who do work, so based on that, I would say a lot do.
Mary - Chicago,
How competitive are the students in clases?
ND Admissions
ND students definitely realize that they live in a community where they hope every one does well so there really is a lot of mutual learning and working together on projects and assignments. That being said, however, some students can be fairly competitive with grades in the classroom, but definitely not “cut throat” ever.
Hope this helps.
James - Houston, TX
Aside from FAFSA and CSS. What else do we need to send in for financial aid consideration?
ND Admissions
Hi James -
Generally, we require both the student and the parent to submit their 2007 tax returns, if filed, and W2’s. In addition, we may request further information or clarification upon reviewing your application. When prompted to submit more information, we recommend that you comply as soon as possible to expedite the awarding process.
Julie - Aurora, Oh
Hi!-I was wondering what the audition process was like for the marching band?
ND Admissions
Students interested in trying out for the band arrive two days before other first year students, on a Wednesday. They will then go through a series of auditions and marching drills for those two days. Finalist will be told of their acceptance into the program by Sunday before classes formally begin the following Tuesday.
Elaine - Clarksville, MD
Hi. For students who cannot play at the varsity level, are there junior varsity teams? What are the different levels of competitive sports at Notre Dame?
ND Admissions
There are a ton of opportunities to participate in sports here on campus! The highest level of competition is probably at the Club level. After that, you can play on your dorm team (usually a pretty decent level of competition) or on a RecSports team (which often consists of a team with you and your friends—sometimes you’re competitive, sometimes you’re not!). Over 80% of our students play some sort of sport here at Notre Dame and there are a number of ways to get involved!
Carly - Westford, MA
How are dorms selected to participate in the pep rallies?
ND Admissions
Carly,
Every dorm participates in each pep rally that is held during the football season. It’s just that 2-3 dorms are selected to “host” pep rallies and what that means is that you get to sit in the front and get a better view of things; every dorm will have a chance to host a pep rally during the season.

Laura - Honolulu, HI
Hello! First of all, I'd just like to say that I am SO excited that I'll be at Notre Dame in August!! I do have one question--I sent in a music CD along with my application for admission; could that same CD be used in consideration for a music scholarship?
Thank you!
*~*LAuRa*~*
ND Admissions
Hi Laura! The Music Department will review the CD. They rarely give out a scholarship, but if they do, they will contact you about it.
Drew - Vallejo, CA
Are there any places in Italy where engineering students commonly study abroad?
ND Admissions
Drew, I’m sorry but engineering students at Notre Dame don’t study abroad in Italy.
Brian - Sisters, OR
Are there summer internships or research opportunities available through the University? If so, what are the usual requirments for getting involved?
ND Admissions
There are literally hundreds of internship opportunities made available through our career center. We are also committed to getting our undergrads involved in undergraduate research as early as possible. Please refer to http://undergradresearch.nd.edu/ for more information.
Andrew - Carmel, IN
I Probably have this info in my packet...can't find it. Where do I have my parents send their tax return and copies of W2s. My dad is really nerveous about just "sending" these out! and is concerned about them "out there."
ND Admissions
Hi Andrew,
We understand your dad’s anxiety about sharing his tax returns. Please be assured we treat them with great confidentiality and security.
The Office of Financial Aid is located at 115 Main Building, Notre Dame, IN 46556
Olivia - San Rafael, CA
Do any of the girl's dorms have reputations for certain characteristics (i.e. similar to how Zahm is known for being kind of the wild and crazy of the boy's dorms)?
Also, are there "brother & sister" dorms?
ND Admissions
Hmm, not that I can think of. When you get here, you should start one. Hm? :0)
There definitely are brother and sister dorms here. I happen to be in Zahm and our sister dorm is Cavanaugh. You’ll find that the brother and sister dorms do a few events every semester together (definitely at Frosh-O, but you also will find some joint brother-sister dorm masses and service events).
Jillian - ,
I've heard only great things about Notre Dame, but I was wondering if there was anything students wished they could change at the school.
ND Admissions
Jillian,
There are definitely a lot of wonderful things about Notre Dame. One thing I’d change this year is say… the football teams record of 3-9. Other than that there aren’t many major things I’d change, maybe for my dorm to not be so far away from the classroom buildings, but that’s about it.
Danielle - , NJ
Can you describe the advising systems you have for students who want to attend law school or grad school?
ND Admissions
Danielle, at every level of Notre Dame you’ll work with advisors who know the requirements for law school and grad school. So when you start out your first year advisor will be well-informed on law school and grad school requirements. We get many students into grad school and law school because they start getting good advice on these opportunities right from the beginning.

Hi Laura! The Music Department will review the CD. They rarely give out a scholarship, but if they do, they will contact you about it.

Are there any places in Italy where engineering students commonly study abroad?
ND Admissions
Drew, I’m sorry but engineering students at Notre Dame don’t study abroad in Italy.
