Kathy - Sudbury, MA
Have all of the old dorms (e.g. Farley) been updated, and if so, in what sense?
ND Admissions
Farley actually had its exterior and windows redone. They probably did some other things too, but I dunno. Some of the other dorms had some serious renovations as well. Dillon got a laundry room, which the guys are especially happy for (except for maybe the guys that had the girls in the dorm across the way do it for them).
John - Clarendon Hills, IL
Hi! Is is possible to double major (probably finance and marketing in Mendoza) and study abroad? Thanks!
ND Admissions
The Mendoza College of Business does not allow for double majoring within the college of business. So you couldn’t do marketing and finance, what you could do is a Business major and an Arts & Letters degree like a foreign language, history, psychology, etc—many students choose this option.
If you’re thinking about Business and Science we have a Science-Business dual-degree program…
Hope this helps..
Victoria - Clearwater, FL
First, I am so excited about coming to ND in the fall!!! Question: I am a figure skater, I know that students are allowed to use the Joyce Center but how exactly does that work? How far is it from the dorms and what is the cost for ice time?
ND Admissions
Hi Victoria!
Welcome to the family! :) The Joyce Center (JACC) is available for students throughout the year. It’s no more than a 15 minute walk from any of the female dorms.
Additionally, we have a figure skating club that has specific practice times. You can visit their website for more information. Notre Dame Figure Skating Club
Mike - Mullica Hill, NJ
Good Evening. I have been accepted into the NROTC unit at NDU, which will pay for my tutition. Is the ROTC scholarship exclusive, or can I also apply for other financial aid to help pay for my non-tuition expenses?
ND Admissions
A ROTC scholarship will be treated as an outside-scholarship separate from our need-based financial aid. As long as you qualify for financial aid, determined by filling out both the FAFSA & CSS PROFILE forms, the Office of Financial Aid may offer you a financial aid package that will cover non-tuition expenses.
Zach - Fairfax, VA
This is a follow up question to one of your recent answers. I received the ND scholar notice designating my intended major in the college of science. If I were to change to engineering, would I be eligible for the engineering honors program?
ND Admissions
Yes, you should be eligible for the Engineering Honors program should you switch from Science.
Kevin - , MN
How often do kids go outside of ND for like a weekend trip to Chicago?
ND Admissions
Chicago is pretty close, but most students will find things to do on campus or in the area. I remember that, when I was a student, Chicago was always tempting, but I never wanted to leave campus—I was afraid I’d miss something!
Adam - Naperville, IL
I was looking at the different choirs available, and it looks like most of them require auditions. I was wondering if there are any choirs that don't require auditions?
Also, how competitive are the auditioned choirs?
ND Admissions
Hi Adam, the major choirs do require auditions. There is a wide range of talent both within and among our different choirs, because we want to make sure that all students interested in joining have that opportunity. Most of the dorms have choirs that sing at mass on Sunday nights that you do not have to audition for.
Beach - St. Petersburg, FL
Is Duncan Hall a boys hall or a girls hall?
ND Admissions
Duncan Hall will be a men’s hall, and the construction of new women’s halls will follow. Here’s hoping their mascot is the donut…
Nancy - New York, NY
Do students usually hang out on school grounds during their free time? Are there any towns or cities near by?
ND Admissions
Hi Nancy,
I would say that the majority of students do stay on campus for most of their entertainment (at least during the day). Mishawaka and South Bend are the closest towns, I live outside NYC so I wouldn’t go naming South Bend a “vibrant city” but it does have a lot of restaurants and bars that students will frequent. If you’re interested, Chicago is only about 90 miles away, which may seem like far but is an easy 1 1/2 hour drive and a good day trip.
Jeanette - Bryan, OH
Hi, Is there any benefit to summiting the advance payment and enrollment intention early? ( realize the deadline is May 1)
Thanks.
ND Admissions
There is no advantage to submitting your confirmation and confirmation fee before the May 1st deadline since all the processes such as housing, course schedules, etc., will not be done until the end of May.
Brent - Williamsburg, VA
What is the additional course work for a NROTC student - How many extra classes a week are there?
ND Admissions
All ROTC students are required to participate in Physical Training three times a week in the morning, Leadership Labs two times a week in the afternoons, as well as various military classes three times a week.
Megan - Glen Ellyn, IL
Is it possible to be a Biology major and study abroad?
ND Admissions
It possible for any student of any major to study abroad. You will work with your First Year advisor to plan out a long-term schedule that will accommodate your abroad ambitions.
Erin - Simsbury, CT
If I'm playing a varsity sport at ND, do I still need to take PE?
ND Admissions
Hi Erin,
Unless you don’t know how to swim (and thus have to take the swim class), varsity athletes do not have to take PE.
Mary - Chicago,
Is there a way to communicate with other students from your area attending ND in the fall?
ND Admissions
Most local alumni clubs host some sort of gathering in the spring or summer for admitted students to meet. I know the Chicago club is pretty active, so I’m sure you will have opportunities to meet lots of current and future Domers!
Mason - Bryan, OH
I am not sure where alumni clubs are in my area. How do I find out about alumni clubs near where I live, and how do I contact them?
ND Admissions
Hi Mason -
I recommend that you visit Notre Dame’s Alumni Club website to search out your nearest Alumni Club. Please visit the following link for more information:
https://secure.alumni.nd.edu/site/c.luIZLdMOJpE/b.2704835/k.9C32/US_Club_Locator/apps/kb/cs/contactsearch.asp

this is totally out of the academic mode of thought, but how about shopping opportunities for someone who lives less than 10 minutes from one of the largest malls in the country!!!
ND Admissions
Hi Amy,
We do have a mall in South Bend, but unfortunately, I can’t say that it will compare in size to what you are used to, however, the good news is that Chicago is only 90 miles away and makes for a great weekend getaway!
Jim - Fullerton, CA
First semester just ended and grades have come out. The only problem I have with my report card is the D in AP Calc BC. I swear this is NOT senoritis and that perhaps it was an underestimation of the class since I jumped from Pre-Calc to calc BC. Going into second semester, I understand where I went wrong and will be working much harder and seeking help while I'm at it. Will my grades still affect my admission status?
ND Admissions
We will likely ask for a written explanation of what happened, and also keep an eye on your 2nd semester math grade to see if your grade recovers.
Jillian - Buffalo, NY
I keep seeing stuff about sending in tax forms and W2s, is that in addition to your FAFSA and CSS?
ND Admissions
Hi Jillian,
Yes, we ask that applicants send signed copies of parent and student 2007 Federal Tax Returns and W2 wage statements in support of their application. Additional information about our procedures is in the Affording a Notre Dame Brochure (which you should have received from our office recently) and on our website at: http://www.nd.edu/~finaid/apply/
Paolo - Bangkok, Thailand
Is there a cinema inside or near the campus?
ND Admissions
Hi Paolo,
We do have a movie theater on campus (one of the only THX-certified sound theaters in the state of Indiana) and a number of other venues on campus where movies are shown.
Steve - Foxborough, MA
I read an earlier question about the single-sex dorms...how do they enforce the visitation rules?

Is it more difficult for a science major to be able to study abroad in a non-English speaking country?
ND Admissions
No, students pursuing a science major will still be able to study abroad. Now if a study abroad program conflicts with your academic schedule or sequence of classes you might have to take some summer courses in order to still graduate on time. Your Academic Advisor in the College of Science will be able to walk you through this process.
Michelle - Austin, TX
I'm interested in becoming a premed major and lately have been hearing a lot about students who double major in premed and music because of new therapy techiniques involving music. If I haven't applied to the music school how would I go about doing so or where can I find more information on this?
ND Admissions
You do not need to apply to the music school. Instead, you can contact the First Year of Studies about adding the major. Click here for more information
Paolo - Bangkok, Thailand
What do students do for fun during the weekends?
ND Admissions
Hi Paolo,
There are many different types of activities that students choose to participate in during the weekends. The university frequently brings comedians, musicians, and actors to campus to perform. The university also has a club called “flip side” that provides students who don’t want to participate in drinking with different entertainment opportunities. Many students can be found in their dorms hanging out with friends, the typical “dorm party”, off campus at house parties, at the movies, or for those who are of age, at one of the bars and/or clubs in South Bend. Don’t worry – you will not be hard pressed to find something to do during the weekends.
Mary - Fishers, IN
Do the parietals end up seeming restrictive to students? Are there punishments if these rules are violated?
ND Admissions
I wouldn’t say parietals are ever restrictive on students. It’s actually kind of nice on weeknights because you know that after midnight, Monday-Thursday, the dorms will become a lot more quiet and after 2am on Fridays and Saturdays all parties will be over so you can go to bed if you want.
In terms of punishments, its up to your hall rector and hall staff on how you’ll be punished for breaking parietals. Oftentimes they’ll keep it in dorm so you just have to do a couple hours of service for your dorm and thats it. It really depends on how badly you’re breaking the rules and how your rector likes to treat things, generally they are pretty nice.
Abby - Houston, TX
How and when will admitted students know what dorms they will be living in?
ND Admissions
Did you hear that ND sends out owls now? :0) If you don’t get one, you’ll probably get a letter in early August, and in that letter you’ll find out exactly in what dorm and with whom you’ll be living.
Peter - Chestertown, MD
What are some of the benefits of enrolling in the Honors Program? Also, what are the differences between the Glynn Family Honors Program and the Engineering Honors Program besides the major of its students?
ND Admissions
Hi Peter,
If you look a little further down in the chat transcript, you’ll find an answer I just gave about the honors program, and can find out more about the program here . The Glynn Family Honors Program covers students in the College of Arts and Letters and the College of Science and this program is a little larger and more established than the College of Engineering.
You should probably first decide what major or college is the best fit for your interests and then discern if the honors program is a good fit as well.
Xander - Washington, DC
My daughter was recently accepted and was too shy to ask this herself: How much interaction do students have with dorms of the opposite sex? Are their sister-brother dorm relationships? She has attended a single-sex high school and was looking forward to interacting with young men. (Just for the record, I'm a big fan of the single sex dorms!)
ND Admissions
While we do have single sex residence halls (which I, as an undergraduate am really glad of, too) students interact and hang out together all the time just like they would anywhere else. We don’t have single sex classrooms or anything like that… if that’s what you’re wondering.
I will admit though that because of the single-sex residence halls, guys tend to be closer with guys and girls with girls just because you live with them and spend the time together all night when members of the opposite sex aren’t allowed in the residence halls after midnight, Sunday-Thursday and after 2am Friday & Saturday.
We do have brother-sister dorm relationships, the intensity of these are up to each individual RA.. but usually you’ll have a few scheduled events together every semester.
Julia - Rye, NY
When I go off to college, I don't want to be surrounded by a bunch of kids who are super high-strung (because if that were the case I would actually go insane and probably get like that too). Are the kids at ND relaxed and normal? Or is school work always the #1 priority?
ND Admissions
Hi Julia,
While academics are a priority for Notre Dame students, students are able to find a balance between school work and having a good time. Certainly there are times in the academic year, such as the week of midterms and finals that some students may be a bit stressed out, but for the most part students are relaxed, down to earth and enjoying their life as a college student!
Megan - Glen Ellyn, IL
What is the medical school acceptance rate for students doing the Arts and Letters Pre-Professional program versus B.S. in Pre-Professional studies?
ND Admissions
Hi Megan,
The overall acceptance rate for Notre Dame students applying to medical school was 85% last year. The acceptance rate for students majoring in Biology, BioChem, or Chemistry was slightly higher than that of other majors, but Pre-Professional programs were well represented in medical school acceptances.
Paolo - Bangkok, Thailand
Hello again, when should my school send the mid-year report?
ND Admissions
The mid-year report should be sent as soon as your first semester grades are available.
Caroline - Battle Creek, MI
Is there any alternative energy related research being done on campus? If so, do you know what the research is?
ND Admissions
Yes, there is, and it’s being spearheaded by our green group on campus. Check them out, green.nd.edu. Their florescent shirts are sweet, and they do cool things on campus too.
Kim - Atlanta, GA
Are there any formal dances during the year at ND?
ND Admissions
Hi Kim,
Yes, there are formal dances during the year. Each dorm will hold usually one formal a semester as well as SYRs “set-up your roommate” dances. Though most people don’t usually get “set up” these are less formal dances that usually take place somewhere on campus.
Bailey - Auburn, NY
I'm interested in trying out for your Poms squad. Can you tell me a little bit about the team or who I can contact for information?
ND Admissions
Bailey,
The Pom Squad is a great tradition at Notre Dame. Because all members must attend a camp before school starts in the summer, the squad is not open to freshmen. Tryouts are held in the spring. Check out their website
Hannah - Cortez, CO
I am interested in moving to South Bend earlier in the summer, around May. Are there usually rooms available for rent just for the summer months?
ND Admissions
Hi Hannah,
A couple of dorm rooms act as a hotel over the summer, but they’re not really a good fit if you’re thinking of MOVING to the area in May. You definitely would not be able to move into your dorm room until the school year starts in August.
Brent - Williamsburg, VA
I am going to be in NROTC. What percentage of the student body is in ROTC at ND?
ND Admissions
Currently less than 5% of our student body is a member of our ROTC programs.
Michael - Covington, GA
Are there any music recording studios on campus?
ND Admissions
Yes there are some facilities on campus where our choirs record, and students may be able to arrange to use them
Erin - Villa Hills, KY
Do most students order laptops through the University? And do you have to wait until orientation to pick it up or could you get it earlier?
ND Admissions
Hi Erin,
I’m not sure the exact percentage of students who order a computer through the university, but it’s a fair number. You can find more information about purchasing a computer here . You will receive information in the mail from the Office of Information Technology this summer about buying a computer and can probably get it before you arrive on campus.
Nancy - New York, NY
How does the fact that ND is a Catholic university affect the student body and life in general?
ND Admissions
hmm.. well I think the extent to which you participate in the Catholic Identity of the University is up to you. Let’s put it this way.. you’ll definitely know when its a holy day of obligation (there’s signs everywhere!), but you of course have the choice of going. That’s the way it is here… you’ll know you’re at a Catholic university, but you won’t be coerced into doing anything that don’t want to do.
Lee - St. Louis, MO
Our EFC that was determined through the FAFSA was absurdly high. I have four more boys to put through college after this one, but Uncle Sam doesn't seem to care a lick about that. At least the Profile recognizes money spent on pre-college private schools. My question is: How does the financial aid package correlate to the EFC and if the EFC is the primary affordability indicator, what are the procedures to identify special circumstances that the EFC seems to neglect?
ND Admissions
Dear Lee,
The Expected Family Contribution (EFC) is a measure of family financial strength and is not a “cash flow” analysis. Consequently families are often surprised by the calculation. The calculation assumes that the contribution will be financed with savings, current and future income.
With that being said, if there are specific expenses you do not feel were considered in the analysis, you should submit a written statement and documentation directly to our office. We will consider the additional information in our review.
Kevin - East Northport, NY
If I get credits for calculus, physics, history, English, and some other courses, what do I do in my FYS? I would definitely not want to go towards sophomore standing, so would I just be able to take classes I'm interested in and maybe some things in my intended major?
ND Admissions
Kevin, AP credit may or may not test you out of courses required for your major. You’ll have to work closely with your advisor to see that your AP credit is properly used. Even students with lots of AP credit find courses to take that are important for their education.
Kathy - Sudbury, MA

I'm interested in trying out for your Poms squad. Can you tell me a little bit about the team or who I can contact for information?
ND Admissions
Bailey, The Pom Squad is a great tradition at Notre Dame. Because all members must attend a camp before school starts in the summer, the squad is not open to freshmen. Tryouts are held in the spring. Check out their website
