Sean - Cleveland, OH
I am interested in coming to visit over my spring break, stay with a student overnight, and hopefully go to 1 or 2 of his classes. Can this be arranged, and if so, how? Who should I contact or get in touch with?
ND Admissions
Hi Sean,
The university has three weekend dates which they invite students to come visit campus and do what you described. You can contact the Office of Admissions to arrange a visit, they would be more than happy to set you up with a current student. Hope this helps…
Tomas - Norman, Oklahoma
What is the debate program like? Would i need to try out or anything?
ND Admissions
The website for debate is under construction but it still very informative. Check it out here
belen - san antonio, tx
For someone who has studied abroad, how immersed were you in the city/culture of wherever you were studying? Were your classes in english, or the foreign language? things like that..
ND Admissions
Hi Belen,
For many study abroad programs how immersed you become in the city/culture you are in is completely up to you. There will be many activities that will help you to learn about the country and plenty of opportunities to get involved in the local community, but it will be up to you to make your study abroad experience what you want it to be. As far as courses are concerned for most programs in non-English speaking countries, the majority of courses will be taught in the native language at an intermediate level of proficiency, (which you will have acquired before you leave campus).
Brooke - Miles City, MT
Do we have student I.D. numbers right now? I might have just missed it but I don't remember seeing anything like that...thanks for answering all my questions :)
ND Admissions
You will receive your ID number in the summer once you confirm and obtain your first packet from the First Year of Studies Program. You will then use your ID number in order to obtain your Notre Dame NetID – an ID you will use during your time at Notre Dame.
James - Houston, TX
How is the orchestra program there?
ND Admissions
We have a number of different orchestras and bands available for which our students can audition. Some students who participate in these are music majors, while others are simply passionate about the instruments that they play, and they want to continue performing. We have a number of places where students perform, including the Debartolo Performing Arts Center and Washington Hall
Scott - Defiance, OH
This isn't an academic question, but I'm an avid golfer and I was wondering what types of opportunities there are for students to play golf recreationally.
ND Admissions
Hi Scott,
As you can imagine, there aren’t too many opportunities to hit the links this time of the year, but you’re probably used to that coming from Ohio. Once it warms up there are two golf courses on campus that have special rates for students. The Burke is a simple 9-hole course that’s about $5 to play and tough to lose a ball. The Warren is a more challenging 18-hole course that’s received several accolades in the few years it’s been open.
Kristin - Westlake, OH
Is there usually a difference between the EFC calculated using the FAFSA and the EFC the financial aid office calculates using the CSS Profile to determine scholarships based on need?
ND Admissions
Dear Kristin,
There is usually a difference between the family contributions calculated by the FAFSA and the PROFILE. The methodologies are very different in what they consider and the allowances that are used. While the family home, business and farm are considered on the PROFILE we often find that the PROFILE contribution is less than the FAFSA contribution; of course it depends on the level of income and assets each family has.
Dominic - Muskegon, MI
If my school has trimesters, when should I submit my Mid-Year Grade Report?
ND Admissions
No problem—report your grades as soon as you can! We’ll eventually see your grades from all three trimesters.
Nick - Dallas, TX
Where is the neareset Chipotle?
ND Admissions
GREAT question! The closest Chipotle is about a mile and a half from campus—it’s a straight shot and I go twice a week, so even without a car you will get a ride and you will get your fill. Also, I’ve heard rumor that they’re building two more…and one will be in walking distance of campus. Mmmmm, burritos…
Susan - Coppell, Tx
I am interested in accounting. Is there a program in place at Mendoza that will give you your 150 hrs to sit for your CPA, and if so what degree would you have upon graduation?
ND Admissions
We have the Master of Science in Accountancy (MSA) program, which is a 5-year program where you complete your 150 hrs to test for your CPA.
Drew - Vallejo, CA
Do you have a skydiving or snowboarding club?
ND Admissions
I know we have a ski club and I believe they participate in snowboarding as well. I do not believe we have a skydiving club. Perhaps you can start one when you get here!
Kaitlin - Middleton, NY
What do most students wear to class?
ND Admissions
Anything comfortable. You by no means have to get dressed up for class (unless you’re doing a presentation in a business class). Some will get more dressed up than others, but a lot of times you’ll see students in jeans and sweatshirts/sweaters when its cold.. or shorts/t-shirts/sandals when its warm out.
Lisa - Savannah, GA
What kind of guidance can I get my freshman year if I have no idea what I want to major in?
ND Admissions
Lisa, Notre Dame is exactly the place for students who have no idea of what to major in. The staff of advisors is well trained at helping students discover their passions.
Victoria - Clearwater, FL
I know ND does not have a model UN program, but is there anything similar?
ND Admissions
cool thing: we have mock trial and debate teams.
cooler thing: they both travel.

Where can I find more info on the dual Business-Science Degree? Thanks!
ND Admissions
Hi John,
You can find information on the Science-Business degree at the following link:
Hope it helps!
Scott - Defiance, OH
What kind of math requirements are there for the Mendoza College of Business?
ND Admissions
Freshmen are required to complete Elements of Calculus I and II prior to the completion of their first year. These classes may also be placed out of with appropriate AP scores, check with the College of First Year Studies for more info on exact score numbers.
Students can also place into Calc II and just skip I, but those are pretty much the only math requirements depending on what business major you’re going into (finance and accounting do require a lot of simple math).
Mason - Bryan, OH
Does Notre Dame have a lap pool and weight facility that is open to all students? I really hope to avoid the "Freshmen 15"!
ND Admissions
We do and it’s open to all. I struggle to do just 5 laps!
Nancy - New York, NY
In response to an earlier question, what do you do for PE if you can't swim at all?
ND Admissions
SWIM LESSONS! All students have to show they can swim before you can graduate from ND (don’t worry—the test is really really easy and I’ve never heard of anyone who was not able to graduate because they could not swim).
Tomas - Norman, OKlahoma
If i want to go abroad my sophomore year is there anything I should do freshman year?
ND Admissions
Tomas, students who go abroad in their sophomore year take the relevant language in their first year. You’ll be advised on this in your summer mailings.
Maxx - Frankfort, IL
Fitness is very important to me in maintaining a healthy lifestyle. Yet, because the pictures are scarce, do the weight-lifting and cardio facilities liken much to that of a normal sized gym? Also, is there a rec area to enjoy sports in intramural teams or just kill time with a friend?
ND Admissions
I probably spend 8-10 hrs in the gym a week because it’s so great. I do lift weights during the week, and I would say the size is just shy of if not comparable to a 24 hr or L.A. Fitness. Rolfs and the Rock are also great places to pick-up a game of basketball, volleyball, or badminton. There are also a variety of classes you can take (yoga, pilates, latin dance, etc.)
Adam - Lima, OH
I want to major in finance, but also take the required courses to move onto medical school and receiving an MD degree. Is it possible at ND to major in finance while still competitively preparing for medical school? Is it possible to participate in medical/science related research on campus although you are a business major? I skimmed the info on the website concerning the business-science degree through the pre-professional program but it was not very clear and it does not sound like the finance degree that I desire. Any advice is appreciated.
ND Admissions
Adam, I suppose anything is possible but a finance/premed combination is extremely unusual. I’ve never heard of a student doing this combination. As long as you take the basic sciences required for medical school (chemistry, organic chemistry, biology, and physics) you can apply to medical school. I think your first year advisor would want to discuss your plans with you.
Sofia - Tucson, Az
I don't personally know anyone who attends Notre Dame but I am very interested in talking to a current student there, perhaps someone who is considering the same major as I am. Is there a way that I can get in contact with a current student who shares similarities with me?
ND Admissions
In terms of official Notre Dame programs, you can contact the Office of Undergraduate Admissions and find out more about scheduling an overnight at the university or being connected with a student to shadow for the day. Ask the same question again, but with what major you’re thinking about and you’ll be referred to more specific help, hopefully.
Beach - Cincinnati, Oh
When we get our football tickets, are we assigned a seat or will we be able to sit with our group of friends?
ND Admissions
You can get together with a group of friends and have your seats assigned with each other.
Caroline - Battle Creek, MI
How active is Notre Dame's SWE chapter? Are there any specific activities they do each year? How easy is it to get involved as freshman?
ND Admissions
The SWE chapter is quite active on campus and yes you can start getting involved as a freshman. Both research opportunities as well as internships are part of the chapter’s activities during the academic year and the summer.
Brooke - Miles City, MT
I have a couple of random non-academic questions- 1) Is there a Pita Pit near campus? I know that seems weird but I really love that place... and 2) I have heard you can just apply to be a manager to the football team. I have managed my high school team for four years and really enjoy it, so I was curious about my chances of doing this for the Irish and what it might entail.
ND Admissions
Hi Brooke,
1) I’m sorry, but I’ve never heard of Pita Pit. If we do have one, it’s news to me!
2) Anyone can be a manager; if you look at their website, you’ll see that you start out your freshman and sophomore year and work your way up from there. You do everything from working with coaches to traveling with the team to working on the sidelines during the game!
Anne - Stamford, CT
Do the students in the architecture program have opportunities to interact with students from other programs?
ND Admissions
Yes definitely!
As freshman, every student is randomly assigned to different dorms, irrespective of major, hometown, etc. Therefore, all students interact with each other from the very beginning. I am sure “archies” become close due to the amount of time they spend in the studio as well as their year long program in Rome, but rest assured they all have friends or acquaintances in other programs.
Grayson - Weiser, ID
Do a large majority of students enter their freshman year with college credit? (AP or dual enrollment)
ND Admissions
Grayson, many students at Notre Dame have AP credit. We do not accept dual enrollment credit.
Megan - Fresno, CA
What kind of athletic facilities are available to non-varsity atheletes?
ND Admissions
Hi Megan,
We have two main facilities on campus, one on each end, which students can use to work out, shoot hoops, run, etc. In addition, many dorms have small work-out and weight-lifting areas for students.
amy - strafford, pa
which airport is easier to access for flights back East?
ND Admissions
We recommend that students fly into South Bend Regional Airport, from there you can fly into Detroit or Cincinnati to connect to a flight to the East.
Michael - Covington, GA
Is there a limit to the number of credits I can receive by taking AP's or SAT II's?
ND Admissions
Michael, there is no official limit on AP credit but not all AP credit works. For instance AP credit cannot get students out of the introductory courses for physics, chemistry, biochemistry, biology, and honors math. Also we carefully advise students interested in medical school about what AP credit to use.
Kirsten - Overland Park, KS
How difficult is it to major in the College of Science and get a minor in Arts and Letters?
ND Admissions
It really depends on what minor you’re looking for and how intensive it is. It also depends on how intense your science major is. But for the most part you’ll definitely be able to do so, you just may have to take an extra course for a few semesters or elect to do an extra summer semester. But a lot of people will major in science and minor in a language, so it’s definitely do-able.
Kevin - East Northport, NY
What's the PE class like? Is that coed? What types of activities do you guys do? It seems like a pretty sweet thing.
ND Admissions
Hi Kevin,
After passing a swim test you will do six different P.E. rotations throughout your freshman year, and I believe all of them are co-ed. You can find a list of your choices here . You can’t go wrong with ballroom dancing.
Mason - Bryan, OH
What is the general configuration of dorms? (Where are the bathrooms and showers located, etc.)
ND Admissions
Generally, you will find that every dorm is divided into two sections per floor (one section might be A with the other B, or one section will be North and the other South, etc), and there will be bathrooms with showers on every floor. Fear not, outhouses are a thing of the past. :0)
Brooke - Miles City, MT
Which University official should a scholarship check be mailed to and to what address?
ND Admissions
Brooke,
Scholarship checks from private scholarship organizations should be sent to the Office of Financial Aid, 115 Main Building, Notre Dame, IN 46556.
Kevin - Eden Prairie, MN
Even after being admitted early, do we have to send in our mid-year grade reports or do we wait until the end of the year?
ND Admissions
We would like the mid-year report to be sent as soon as your first semester grades are available, regardless of your admissions status.
Alli - North Attleboro, MA
Can anyone sympathize with me that they were not HUGE football fans before going to Notre Dame? Did u change ur mind once u got there and come to love football weekends?
ND Admissions
I knew nothing about football when I first got here, but you just get so caught up in the spirit of things when you are here. There is nothing quite like being in the student section during an exciting football game and cheering along with all of your best friends. Football weekends are so full of spirit and tradition. You don’t have to be a fan of the sport to enjoy the atmosphere.
Tom - Avon Lake, OH
Are there chartered buses available to the Cleveland area over school breaks?
ND Admissions
Yes—the alumni club sponsors chartered busses to Cleveland (and other locations) over breaks.
Mike - Chicago, IL
How prevalent is drinking in the dorms?
ND Admissions
I assume you mean drinking of alcohol? Underage drinking is prohibited according to Indiana and Federal law. We recognize, however, that some students will choose to drink even though they are underage. To what extent drinking is prevalent is not clear. If a student is caught drinking who is underage, the hall staff will determine on a case by case basis how to handle the situation.
Sean - Cleveland, OH
I am entertaining thoughts about becoming an actuary after majoring in Accounting or Finance. How can I prepare for that while still at Notre Dame? And what percent of students looking into that profession pass the exams and take it on as a career?
ND Admissions
Sean, the proper preparation for an actuary career is through the math department. You should do the Math-Business major which is an option in the Math Department. A small percentage of math majors choose actuary careers and they have a very high success rate on the actuary exams.
Adam - Woodbridge, VA
I hear mixed things about scholarships. On the website it says financial aid is based on BOTH need and merit. But in a previous question you said it was just need. Is merit a factor?
ND Admissions
Dear Adam,
Scholarships are based upon demonstrated financial need and not strictly merit-based. Academic achievement, leadership, etc. are also considered in determining scholarship assistance amounts (as described earlier when we indicated that Notre Dame Scholars receive less loan).
Sean - Cleveland, OH
