What kind of performance opportunities are there for a theater major?
ND Admissions
There are many performance opportunities for theater majors throughout the entire school year. The FTT department and drama club offer several plays for their students and members.
Joan - Chicago, IL
Can you tell me how many math majors are at ND?
ND Admissions
Hi Joan,
We usually have about 120-130 students enrolled as Math majors each year.
Katie - Columbus, OH
Last year my high school abolished class rank. Since it would have benefited me to report it, and teachers have access to the information through their computer grading system, could I have one of them report it or could I self-report that information?
ND Admissions
You can have your counselor report your estimated class-rank as it stands when you apply.
Liza - Charleston, SC
Is it acceptable to go over the 500 word limit for the application essay? For example 548 words?
ND Admissions
It’s ok-but don’t go too far! We won’t be sitting there and counting words, but we also will not appreciate a very long essay.
Sarah - Amarillo, TX
What is the percentage of females in the engineering program?
ND Admissions
Hi Sarah- The current freshman engineering class is about 33%.
Lisa - Des Moines, IA
Do expect more than statistics in the counselor's statement? I do not know my counselor that well and vice versa so it seems unlikely that he will be able to give a clear picture of my full capabilities on a personal level.
ND Admissions
Hi Lisa! It is not to your disadvantage if you do not know your counselor or if he/she does not know you. Counselors have the option of submitting a letter with the counselor’s statement, but it is not required, all that we need from counselor’s is the statement with the statistics.
Mary - Wilmington, NC
Are there opportunities to volunteer in a medical environment in the South Bend area?
ND Admissions
Hi, Mary! Absolutely. Our Center for Social Concerns (CSC) on campus has a ton of opportunities to volunteer in nearly every capacity. Medical opportunities include AIDS Assist, Cardinal Care Nursing & Rehab Center, St. Joseph Health Center Chapin St. Clinic, Hospice of St. Joseph’s County, and St. Joe’s Regional Medical Center (Hospital). Plus, students are always welcome to present the CSC with ideas and get support and/or funding! For more information on existing programs, check out http://socialconcerns.nd.edu/campus_local/local_community/local_orgs.shtml.
Matt - Johnson City, NY
With the response to the Early Action question, you said that you are more conservative when reading the files for the applicants. What do you mean by this? Also, I am ranked third in my class but scored a 1380 on the SATs and have numerous extra-curricular activities. Will my SAT score hurt my chance of being accepted through Early Action?
ND Admissions
Hi Matt- Since we only get about a quarter of our applications in EA, we are a bit more conservative because we don’t know how big the applicant pool will get overall. So we are a bit tougher- so that all who apply have an equal chance to be admitted.
Robert - Fort Wayne, IN
To make the varsity golf team, what is the average for 18 holes?
ND Admissions
Good question. I don’t know—but you can contact the coach of the Mens’ Golf Team at James.Kubinski.4@nd.edu.
Winston - Fishers, IN
What are teams like? (Varsity, Intramural, & Interhall)
ND Admissions
The competition of the team really varies. We’re D-I for our varsity sports, so obviously those are very competitive. Some of the club and intramural sports are also quite competitive, but at the same time it’s possible to get a group of your friends together and just have fun with the sport of your choice.
Stevie - Manhattan Beach, CA
What are the dining halls like? How many are there, and do students have access to most of them?
ND Admissions
The dining halls in the past have been ranked pretty highly across the nation. There are two dining halls on campus and students have access to each. There’s always a good selection of food from which you can choose!
Cynthia - La Canada, CA
What percentage of students live on campus? Is housing guaranteed all four years?
ND Admissions
Hi Cynthia,
The residential atmosphere on campus is absolutely amazing and 80% of our students live on campus. We see the dorms as a central part of the Notre Dame experience and housing is guaranteed all four years.
Jimmy - Edina, MN
Does Notre Dame participate in Licoln-Douglas debate?
ND Admissions
Yes, our debate team competes policy and parliamentary debates nation-wide.
Maddy - Bronx, NY
Would a "Rudy" essay hurt our chances because its so commonplace, even if it does apply to me?
ND Admissions
Hi Maddy! Thanks for your question. The personal statement is a way for the admissions office to hear from the applicant in his or her own voice. We do not offer an interview at Notre Dame, so it is the applicant’s one time to share something about him or herself. Being that we are interested in learning more about the applicant, I would use this space to write about you, ultimately we know just about everything there is to know about “Rudy” and the role he played in Notre Dame history.
Laura - Tuckahoe, NY
What is the percentage of females enrolled in the Mendoza School of Business?
ND Admissions
Hi Laura- We’re not quite sure about this one- but the collective wisdom in the room suggests it’s around 40%.That’s our final answer! :)
Jimmy - Edina, MN
Does Notre Dame have a chess team/club? Does it participate in intercollegiate tournaments?
ND Admissions
Yes, we have a chess club (I wish I knew how to play). More info here: http://www.nd.edu/~ndchess/
Liz - Kensington, CT
Is the American Studies major affiliated with the John W. Gallivan Program in Journalism, Ethics, and Democracy?
ND Admissions
Hi Liz,
Yes, the Gallivan program is affiliated with the American Studies program. That said, students who are not American Studies majors can apply to the “JED” program (and many are accepted). In addition, it is possible to major in American Studies without being part of the Journalism program.
Shauna - Cataumet, MA
Does the application have to be complete by the deadline? My class rank will be recalculated a few weeks after December 31, along with the new mid-year grades. Can the new class rank be considered instead of the old one? I am guessing that it will change significantly as I am one of only four seniors taking four APs this year.
ND Admissions
Hi Shauna- Sure thing, you can update your application as new information becomes available.
Julian - Bloomington, IN
What is the minority graduation rate?
ND Admissions
Overall, 95% of our students graduate on time and the percentage of ethnic minority students graduating on time is comparable to this.
Stevie - Manhattan Beach, CA
Are students applying for financial aid put in a separate applicant pool for admissions to ND?
ND Admissions
No, we are need-blind during admissions. We do not care if you have 5 cents or 5 million dollars when you apply!
Harry - Cumberland, MI
How many teams are there for intramural football and how exactly does this program run? Are there a lot of injuries?
ND Admissions
The intramural football program is divided into a men’s and womens league. The men’s league consists of 14 teams, each men’s hall fields one team. There are usually tryouts for the men’s dorms as they are fairly competitive – usually more competitive than most high school programs. The men’s league is full contact, and high school ref’s are hired to ref each game. Teams hold practices each week and the games are played on on Sundays. There is a regular season consisting of 5 games, followed by a playoff. The championship game is played in Notre Dame stadium. It is an amazing experience, and worth it to participate. As far as injuries, it is full contact, so there are some, however, they are not excessive. Another fact about the Notre Dame intramural program: we have the top intramural program in the country and roughly 84% of students participate in one of the intramural sports programs.
Hannah - Cortez, CO
If I got a 1460 on my SAT and a 34 on my ACT should I consider applying Early Decision?
ND Admissions
You should apply early if you feel that every part of your application is very strong, not just the test scores. If you are at or near the top of your high school class, have been active in your school and/or community, and feel that your recommendation and essay will be strong, go ahead and apply early. If you are unsure, feel free to call our office to speak to an admissions counselor for more personal guidance.
Arnela Sulovic - Redlands, CA
If a parent recently underwent bankrupcy would that hinder or help a student with financial aid?
ND Admissions
Financial aid at Notre Dame is completely need-based and completed on an annual basis for reasons such as this.
Sean - Southampton, NY
Is there a frisbee club?
ND Admissions
Hi Sean,
We have an Ultimate Frisbee Club. You can check out their website at http://www.nd.edu/~ultimate/.
Julian - Bloomington, IN
What is the most popular major for incoming freshmen?
ND Admissions
Hi, Julian! All of our freshmen, regardless of intent, are placed into our First Year of Studies. We do not let them declare a major until the end of their first year here. That said, many of our freshmen do have a plan for a major, or “intent” when they begin studying here at Notre Dame. Of the students with intent, more of them have Political Science, Preprofessional Studies, and Psychology in mind. Biology and history are popular, too. A large number of freshmen will change their “intent,” though, some multiple times before declaring a major!
Sean - Southampton, NY
How much weight do your extra curricular activities carry in the selection process? For example, I am an eagle scout, and have numberous other activities, how much weight does it carry?
ND Admissions
Hello Sean! Extracurricular activities are definitely something that we consider in the selection process. They are important, however there is no set percentage of how much weight they carry. It sounds like you are off to a good start by participating in eagle scouts and other activities!
Julian - Bloomington, IN
What percentage of the student population are athletes?
ND Admissions
Hi Julian- That number fluctuates from 6-8% of our enrolled class each year.
Linda - Warren, MI
Hi! My son is very interested in your college. We heard though that it is very tough to get in. He did receive a 36 on his ACT and has a 4.33 (?) GPA. He is taking SAT test subjects in October. What else are you looking for besides good grades and how important are those essays I keep bugging him to get started on? Thanks, Linda
ND Admissions
It’s never too early to start on the essay! While he (obviously) did very well on his ACT, we also look at the rigor of his classes, his grades and GPA, his extracurricular activities, a teacher evaluation and that essay. Students who are admitted are well rounded and excel in all areas.
Benjamin - Valencia, CA
Thank you guys. This has been really helpful, but now I have to gallop out of here and study. Will you guys be having anymore of these live chat sessions for prospective students in the future?
ND Admissions
Thanks and good luck with the studies! We will be having chats for admitted students in the springtime, so stay tuned. If you think of questions in the meantime, please feel free to call our office: 574.631.7505.
Kelly - Clarksville, MD
The avg SAT scores for transfer students seems to be much lower than the avg scores for regular admissions. What are the pros and cons of being a transfer student?
ND Admissions
As a transfer student, your college grades and courses carry more weight than your standardized test scores. I suggest you review our transfer website for more information. Probably the biggest “con” to transfer admission is that on-campus housing is not guaranteed.
Katie - Columbus, OH
If my parents went to law school at ND am I considered a legacy? Could you please explain what the effect of legacies is on admission?
ND Admissions
Hi Katie- Yes, indeed- if either of your parents has an ND degree, you compete in the “legacy pool” for a spot in the class.
Hannah - Cortez, CO
How does financial aid get calculated when my parents are divorced and one of them makes substantially less money? Also, what if my parent who makes more money is not planning on helping me much with college costs?
ND Admissions
Hannah, your questions would be best answered by contacting the Office of Financial Aid: finaid@nd.edu
Norah - Burnsville, MN
How competitive is the Notre Dame varsity softball team? Would it be difficult for a freshman with relatively good statistics to join as a walk-on?
ND Admissions
Hi Norah,
Our softball team is a Division I team. It is fairly competitive to be on the team, but if you are interested in playing you should contact the coach. Deanna Gumpf, 574-631-4840.
Arnela Sulovic - Redlands, CA
I am taking 6 AP classes this year. Does Notre Dame look at senior grades?
ND Admissions
Yes, we look at grades from all four years of high school.
Julian - Bloomington, IN
What percentage are incoming freshmen minorities?
ND Admissions
Last year, 21% of the incoming freshmen were minorities.
Ross - Northville, Mi
What percentage of incoming freshmen have a preference for engineering?
And, what percentage those students actually continue on in the College of Engineering?
Third, which engineering discipline at ND has the most students?
ND Admissions
Ross, since your questions are so specific, I’d encourage you to contact someone in the engineering department directly. Dr. Cathy Pieronek would be the best person to contact: Pieronek.1@nd.edu
Roberta - Dunedin, FL
Are the dorm assignments completely random, or is there some consideration for different living habits in the form of a survey?
ND Admissions
Dorm assignments are arbitrary freshmen year and there is not an in-depth survey sent out to incoming students. Although it may seem scary at first I found it to be a good experience to meet someone who is not entirely alike me.
Dan - Cranford, NJ
If my SAT score is in the high 1300s (and I am planning on raising it on October 6th), I am in the top 5.5% of my class at a competitive and respected high school, I am in the most rigorous courses, and I am so involved with extracurriculars the application did not provide me with enough boxes to show them all, do I have a chance if I apply early action? Or should I wait until regular action?
ND Admissions
Hi Dan,
We are very conservative in accepting students during Early Action and those who are accepted excel in all aspects of the application. I would wait and apply Regular Action and use that time to work on raising your SAT (while high-1300s is good, it is still below our average from last year).
Sean - Southampton, NY
When evaluating SAT scores, does ND combine tests, or just look at the best test?
ND Admissions
When the admissions team reviews the SATs, they combine the best section scores.
Jen - Chicago, IL
If one was caught stealing in 8th grade, due to bad friendship influences, but it has been removed from their record because they are now 18, will it effect their addmissions? Say otherwise they are very competative in the applicant pool. And must they mention the inncident on their applicant since it has been removed from their record.?
ND Admissions
Hi Jen,
I don’t think the student would have to mention an 8th grade incident of this nature. Any infraction that occurred in high school should be reported even if it was removed from the student’s record.
