How popular is intramural soccer on campus? Does each dorm house have their own team? What about club level? Is there a club team or teams? I know I'm not talented enough to make the varsity team....but maybe club.
ND Admissions
Each mens dorm as their own interhall soccer team. The competition is surprisingly high and everyone always has a great time. It’s a fun way to keep playing the sport but not having too big of a time commitment. We do not have a men’s club soccer team unfortunately. Check out our athletic website to find a list of the men’s club teams we DO have and maybe you will find some other sport you are interested in! Let me know if you have any more questions!
Joowon - Shanghai,
How cold is it there? How much clothing do students normally wear on campus? Also, how are the heating systems in dorms? How much clothing do people wear in dorms during the winter?
ND Admissions
Currently, it is 56° F. Students are typically fully clothed. Some may be still rocking a light coat while most have spring appropriate attire. There is heating in the dorms, but not all dorms have A/C. Students tend to dress pretty casually (shorts, t-shirts, pajama pants, etc.) in the dorms throughout the year including winter.
Coley - Washington, DC
How many people are on the wait list and how many do you expect to be accepted?
ND Admissions
Hi Coley-
It’s difficult to predict just what might happen with the waiting list this year. We are still “watching” the number of confirmations and suspect that it may take more students until May 1 to finalize their college plans for next year. Likewise, students are “responding” to our wait list offers every day- so that number will continue to grow through the end of the month.
Ramon - Tegucigalpa, HON
At the rate my Math class is going I don't think we'll see much of Pre-Calculus. Is it really necessary for me to study it in the summer to be ready for the Calculus I class? (I've decided on Engineering as a major)
ND Admissions
Hi Ramon,
The Calculus I class you take as a freshman at ND will be taught assuming you’ve had a solid foundation in at least Pre-Calculus. Technically, you would not be required to take a Calculus class at a local college this summer, but probably the more you can do to familiarize yourself with the material before freshman year, the better.
Everistus - Abuja, Nigeria
I'm interested in playing soccer for Nd but I didn't apply as an athlete. I'm wondering how I can play for the soccer team if it's still possible.
ND Admissions
Some of our sports teams have open tryouts each year, but that is up to the discretion of the coach. We also have very competitive and talented intramural teams, too. You can definitely still enjoy playing if you come to ND.
Sara - Dallas, TX
How many classes can I expect in the first two years that will be over 15 students?
ND Admissions
Sara, the smallest courses you are likely to take during your first two years are likely to be seminar, foreign language, and first year composition courses. All of these would be in the 15 to 20 range.
Selina - ,
Will I be able to visit ND in Late May/Early June 09, and sit in on classes or stay overnight in dorm?
ND Admissions
Hey Selina,
Unfortunately, classes end in the beginning of May, so it won’t be possible to sit in on a class and stay in a dorm that late in the year. Sorry!
Mary - Minneapolis, MN
What are the advantages and disadvantages to Notre Dame's location in South Bend?
ND Admissions
The city of South Bend offers a variety of experiences for students. While South Bend is a smaller city in comparison to Chicago and New York, there are still many opportunities for students to find entertainment, eateries, arts, sports, etc. For those who need a quick trip to the big city, we are a short hour and a half drive from Chicago. Explore our website for more information about life in South Bend.
Mary - Minneapolis, MN
How do the rigorous ND academics complement an active extracurricular life?
ND Admissions
Students at Notre Dame are heavily involved in extracurriculars. The majority of students find some sort of club or organization to be involved in at some point during their career. The vast majority of those students will become involved in service activities as well. It is not too difficult to balance academics and extracurriculars, but that is on more of an individual basis, and Notre Dame feels as though it is an important component of a student’s education to be involved in activities in other areas beside academics.
Joowon - Shanghai,
Are there any special organizations for international students? Do international students find it easy to blend in with the school environment as soon as they get there?
ND Admissions
Hi Joowon,
There are a number of international and cultural organizations on campus for our students, but the University also has the Office of International Student Services and Activities (ISSA). The combination of the two will certainly help students get to know Notre Dame and American customs and culture and help you feel comfortable on campus. So don’t worry—we’ll help you out!
Johnny - Fairmont, WV
How is your roommate chosen? Is it completely random or do they match you up with a person of similar interests?
ND Admissions
You are assigned a roommate and a dorm completely randomly. This is different than some other schools do it but it keeps everything really fair and allows you to meet a lot of new people! You of course can always switch roommates after your freshman year but you would be pleasantly surprised to know that the pairings often work out really well!! Let me know if you have any more questions!
Eric - San Juan, PR
Are laptops a necessity on campus? If so is there a place where we can buy them in South Bend?
ND Admissions
Hi Eric,
Laptops are not a requirement of students on campus and there are about a dozen computer labs on campus that you can use, with several of them open 24 hours. If you do choose to purchase a laptop, you can do so at home and bring it to campus with you or purchase one directly from Notre Dame . You could of course also purchase a laptop online or from a local store like Best Buy.
Joowon - Shanghai,
When is the library open everyday?
ND Admissions
The library is open everyday from 7am-2am on weekdays and 7am-12am on weekends. During midterm week and finals week, however, it is open 24 hours a day!!
Peter - Falmouth, MA
Does Notre Dame offer a Great Books Program?
ND Admissions
Peter, ND has a Great Books program: the Program of Liberal Studies. Students enter the program in their second year. It is built around seminar courses.
Joowon - Shanghai,
I am international student. If I didn't apply for financial aid the first year, can I still apply for financial aid the next year? Or any other scholarships?
ND Admissions
Hi Joowon,
Aid for international students is very limited. International students who wish to apply for aid should do so at the time they apply for admission to the University. An international student’s aid package is then set for all four years they are enrolled. Unfortunately, international students who did not apply for aid at the time of admission are not able to subsequently apply for aid through the University.

The stereotype of Notre Dame is that it is both religiously and socially conservative. Is this the case?
ND Admissions
Yes that is definitely the stereotype and in most cases true! But at the same time you have to remember ND has an incredibly diverse student body and we have a pretty large liberal population as well. You will find a group of friends that you get along with no matter your degree of religiosity or your political viewpoints—Don’t Worry!!!! (I get this question a lot) Let me know if you have any more questions!

How difficult is it for freshmen to get football tickets for themselves as well as for family members?
ND Admissions
All students are guaranteed season football tickets. Parents are guaranteed tickets to at least one of the parent games.
Jiayi - Hangzhou,
There are four questions: 1.When and how many times I can change my 'intended major'(I know in this summer one advisor will design my schedule according to the intended major, but now I'm not sure about my intended major)? 2. Employment is part of my financial aid package; can I choose or change the job? 3. I felt surprised and sorry that the financial aid doesn’t meet my demonstrated need. What can I do? The big cost really affects my decision between ND and some other more affordable colleges.4.How's the status of job placement in business school and College of engineering in ND?
Thank you very much!! =)
ND Admissions
Jiayi, that’s a lot of questions. In terms of changing your major – you can change it as many times as you want keeping in mind that you take all of your university requirements. Regarding campus employment, yes, you can choose your job. As for financial aid, our financial office does everything it can to meet 100% of your family’s demonstrated financial need. If you feel there are other circumstances or issues, please feel free to contact them. You can call them at 574.631.6436. Lastly, to answer your job placement question – Notre Dame’s name recognition helps a great deal in finding a job. You’ll be fine.
Jack - Chicago, IL
What are good things to bring to the dorm for summer school and then for the regular semesters?
ND Admissions
For summer as well as regular sessions at Notre Dame, students bring whatever they may feel like they will need to live a normal life. This includes the obvious like clothing, toiletries, and hobbies, but also things more specific to college, like a futon, mini-fridge, your own computer (if desired), bedding, and sometimes a carpet. Closets, desks, and beds are provided. These are the most general things that people bring, but each student has his own needs. Being from Chicago, you can probably have things sent to you or bring things back when you go home for breaks or weekends if you forget anything.
Nishank - Sao Paulo, SP
Hey, I am an international student and i was wondering how i can pay the $500 enrollment fee?
ND Admissions
Hi Nishank (and any other international students who are wondering),
If you drop me an e-mail (morourk1@nd.edu) I can reply with the instructions for sending the deposit via wire transfer.

My twin brother and I were wondering if any accommodations could be made for us to be placed in the same dorm?
ND Admissions
Hi Conor-
Sorry, but our housing assignments are done randomly…so there is a 1 in 15 chance that you and your brother will be in the same dorm next year! Thanks for your question.
Brittani - Effingham, IL
I know that you offer music lessons through your music department and I'm interested in violin lessons. How much do these lessons cost and are they billed through the registrar or through the teacher?
ND Admissions
Each semester is divided into two seven- week sessions. The fee for seven half-hour lessons is $140. Longer lessons can be arranged accordingly. More information can be found on the Department of Music’s website.
John - Phoenix, AZ
The following questions are for a student who comes from a family of four, and whose parents make about $130,000 (before taxes):
Did you get any FAFSA money or other Financial Aid?
Did you earn any merit scholarships (not from ND)?
How are you financing your education? Loans, parents, job?
How much debt will you have accumulated by graduation?
Thank you!
ND Admissions
Hi John,
The type of federal aid you will receive depends will typically depend on your family’s demonstrated financial need, as certain federal loans and grants are need-based. All students who file the FAFSA are eligible to receive a Federal Unsubsidized Stafford Loan – for freshman this loan has a base maximum of $3,500. If you filed the CSS/Financial Aid PROFILE in addition to the FAFSA, your eligibility for University need-based scholarship will also be reviewed.
Outside scholarships first go toward reducing any need-based Federal loans or work study. More information on our outside scholarship policy can be found in our Undergraduate Financial Aid Conditions and Information brochure on our website at http://www.nd.edu/~finaid/undergraduate/publications/
Many students finance a college education through various means, including but not limited to scholarships and grants, work study, loans, summer earnings, savings, and assistance from parents. How you individually finance your education will in part depend on your resources and circumstances.
The average indebtedness of a Notre Dame graduate is approximately $27,569.
Ruoqing - Beijing, China
1. How many international students in ND will be able to find jobs in America after graduation?
2. As for the $500 nonrefundable advance payment, should I pay it online or just send you a cheque along with my confirmation card?
Thanks!
ND Admissions
Hi Ruoqing,
1) I can’t give you an exact number as it’s obviously going to depend on the year and the aspirations of our graduating students, but we actually have more students stay in the United States after graduation (for at least a year) than those who go back to their home countries.
2) Drop me an e-mail (morourk1@nd.edu) and I can send you instructions for sending a wire transfer with your confirmation deposit.
Thanks!
Javier - San Diego, CA
Is it true that Notre Dame expects a larger financial contribution from the student each year?
ND Admissions
Dear Javier,
I am not exactly sure what you are asking so I will share a few thoughts with you—
The financial aid process is an annual application process so the family contribution is reevaluated each year. If all factors remain relatively constant (e.g., income, assets, family size, number in college, etc.) then we would anticipate that the family contribution would remain relatively constant and the financial aid package would remain relatively the same (the need-based scholarship would increase as costs increase).
If you are specifically referring to the contribution that is expected from all students who receive financial aid from their summer earnings, you are correct that we expect $1,800 from first-year students and $2,400 from continuing students.
Ramon - Tegucigalpa, HN
Do we have to walk a lot throughout campus during our first year? If yes, would bringing a bike be recommended?
ND Admissions
Depending on which dorm you are in and what building you have classes in you may be walking a lot or not much at all. The longest walk you will generally have would be no more than 15 minutes. Lots of people on campus do have bikes and use them often. Lots of other people don’t, including myself, and can still get to class on time! So the answer is definitely personal preference. Just keep in mind that there are several months during our loooong winter where you won’t be able to really use your bike! Oh and make sure you have a bike lock or someone will inevitably “borrow” it. Let me know if you have any more questions!
Casey - Atlanta, GA
Do you have detailed activities for day host (for high school seniors), overnight visit and open house for parent ? My son is an admmitted student and currently is still in the high school. It is not easy to schedule a visit by skipping classes for so many days, like Thursday overnight visit. Thank you.
ND Admissions
Hi Casey-
Thanks for joining us tonight! You are welcome to visit any day- and we can arrange a day host- although you have to be careful as classes end on April 29th- and after that final exams will otherwise occupy our hosts’ time! Call our office at 574-631-7505 for details and to make arrangements that fit your schedule. We also have a parent open house scehduled for Monday, April 27.
Meghan - Shelton, CT
I'm really interested in international relations, but ND only has a political science major. In browsing the website however I found someone who was a political science and international peace studies double major - so now I'm just really confused....
ND Admissions
Hi Meghan,
International relations is actually a part of Political Science. Political science has four sections: American government, international relations, comparative government and political theory. You can choose to “focus” on one specific area (I took almost all of my classes in the American government area) or you can mix and match between the sections. In the end, your degree is in Political Science, but you can concentrate on more specific areas if you’d like.
International peace studies is completely separate from Political Science, though it’s possible to double major.
Sean - ,
Do all students have access to football tickets - how does this work?
ND Admissions
Hi Sean, yes, all students have the opportunity for football tickets. Student attendance at football games are a big part of Notre Dame’s tradition and we want to be able to include everybody.
Joowon - Shanghai,
Are theology and philosophy course required for first year students? What is normally taught in theology classes? Does it matter if students are not religious?
ND Admissions
Each student is required to take 2 semesters each of theology and philosophy courses at some point during their time at Notre Dame. Most students will take a semester of each during their first year. There are a variety of topics covered in each subject, with a wide range in specificity. Some classes focus on one specific religion, such as Catholicism or Buddhism, and others are more broad, such as World Religions. Students need not be religious to feel comfortable in these courses. We do, however, expect that students are willing to engage in discussions and are open to hearing opposing viewpoints on issues of faith and spirituals.
Brittani - Effingham, IL
Will there be a club fair or something of the sort at the beginning of the year?
ND Admissions
There is also a big club fair right at the beginning of the year where each club sets up its own booth and has lots of information out. It’s a great place to walk around and sign up for lots of things!! This will occur within the first two weeks of school generally. Let me know if you have any more questions!
Brittani - Effingham, IL
What exactly does a day host do on a campus visit?
ND Admissions
Day hosts show prospective students around the campus and basically show what “a day in the life” is like. This usually means that a prospective student will see what a student’s class schedule is like and thus what classes can be like at Notre Dame. There is also an opportunity to go to the dining halls and see what the food is like here. Extra curriculars are also included in a day visit.
Meghan - Shelton, CT
What is there to do for fun on a typical friday or saturday night?
ND Admissions
There is always SO much going on every weekend, it really depends on your interests. ND hosts several concerts throughout each semester- for instance I’ve seen Third Eye Blind, Common, Ben Folds—Sarah Bareilles is actually playing tomorrow night! Similarly, a lot of comedians will have stand up shows. If you are into theater, there are always a couple plays that go up a few times a semester. Dorms will have dances frequently. We have two movie theaters on campus (one with movies still in theaters and one with more artsy films) that are always showing really good films.
There is always a lot going on on campus, it’s just a matter of knowing what you are interested in. Let me know if you have any more questions!
Matthew - Los Angeles, Ca
If you go off the FAFSA alone, my family's EFC is about $29,000, of which nearly all will have to be put up through loans because my parents really don't have any money saved. What financial aid can I expect to see in addition to that? I'm worried it won't be enough.
ND Admissions
Dear Matthew,
Notre Dame uses both the FAFSA and the CSS/PROFILE application to evaluate eligibility for financial aid; I hesitate to answer your question based upon FAFSA only.
Financial need is determined by taking the cost of attendance and subtracting the calculated family contribution. To meet financial need, Notre Dame uses a combination of self-help (work and student loans) and University Scholarship assistance. In terms of financing the $29,000 family contribution, your family will likely need to use a combination of current income and future income (loans).
If you have not received your financial aid package, I suggest you email our office at finaid@nd.edu and check on the status of your file.
B - , IL
how strong is poly sci at ND?
ND Admissions
Hi B,
I was a Political Science major myself and found the program to be very strong. There are four areas around which you can center your studies (though you can also study all four): American government, comparative politics, political theory and international relations. The department-like all of them on campus-does a great job of giving you an outstanding education while also helping you find research, internship or job opportunities. And, you’re well prepared for whatever you would like to do after graduation!
Joowon - Shanghai,
Are there many internships available in the South Bend area?
ND Admissions
There are a number of internships in the South Bend area that run concurrently with the semester. Sometimes, students will work in the South Bend area as part of a class or completely of their own accord. There are also a number of internships that run throughout the summer for those student who may be staying in the area for the summer. Finally, local employers will stop into campus throughout the year to recruit students for internships and jobs.
Joowon - Shanghai,
Do students usually use credit cards on campus? If so, which type of credit card do most students use?
ND Admissions
There is not much need to use credit cards on campus. Usually the only places that students find that they need to use a credit card is at the bookstore (for text books, university apparel, memorabilia, etc) or online. The food services on campus provide you with what are called FlexPoints, which are essentially money that a student can spend at the food locations. However, if a student does have a credit card and needs to use it, it is from home, and the major credit cards are the most popular. The Notre Dame Federal Credit Union is the bank system on campus (located conveniently in the center of campus) and uses Visa.

Sorry, but our housing assignments are done randomly…so there is a 1 in 15 chance that you and your brother will be in the same dorm next year! Thanks for your question.

The following questions are for a student who comes from a family of four, and whose parents make about $130,000 (before taxes): Did you get any FAFSA money or other Financial Aid?
More information on our outside scholarship policy can be found in our Undergraduate Financial Aid Conditions and Information brochure on our website at http://www.nd.edu/~finaid/undergraduate/publications/ Many students finance a college education through various means, including but not limited to scholarships and grants, work study, loans, summer earnings, savings, and assistance from parents.
Thanks!

If you have not received your financial aid package, I suggest you email our office at finaid@nd.edu and check on the status of your file.

how strong is poly sci at ND?
